I used to think that this was an over-reach, but I am now coming round to the idea. Taking dangerous offenders off the streets has to be the priority, preventing other innocents becoming the victims of their awful crimes. And let’s be honest - most often that is women and girls - I honestly think that this era is the most dangerous time for British women and girls and this can only help to protect them.

I witnessed something at a coffee shop. Teenager working register. Customer ordered. Kid rang it wrong. Customer yelled. Called him stupid. Incompetent. Made a scene. Kid kept apologizing. Near tears. Manager came over. Expected manager to appease the customer. Apologize. Offer free stuff. Instead she said “Get out.” Customer looked shocked. “Excuse me?” “You heard me. Get out of my shop. Don’t come back.” Customer sputtered. “I’m the customer. He messed up.” Manager stayed firm.

I canceled a date because I wasn’t feeling great. Rain had been falling since evening, the kind that makes the whole city feel slower. My period had started, I was tired, emotional, and honestly not in the mood for anything except my blanket and silence. I told him the truth. I assumed we’d just reschedule. Instead, he asked if he could stop by for a minute. A little while later, there was a knock at my door. He stood there soaked from the rain, hoodie damp, holding a small bag with ice cream and chocolate inside. The cold air followed him in for a second, mixing with the soft scent of his perfume and the rain outside. He handed me the bag, looked at me for a moment longer than usual, then pulled me gently into a hug. And for a second… it felt like déjà vu. Like I had lived that exact moment before. The rain. The silence. His hand resting softly on my waist. The way my body melted against his without thinking. He brushed my hair behind my ear and smiled like he knew exactly what he was doing to me without even trying. No pressure. No “can I come in?” No attempt to turn it into something else. But somehow, that made the tension worse. Because as he turned to leave, all I could think about was how badly I wanted to stop him… and how dangerous rainy nights can become when someone makes you feel wanted without asking for anything at all.

As an SIO I worked out my hours vs pay and realised that I fitted the definition of a victim of modern day slavery.. But I would do it all again, great job, great people, great memories.
