Tomorrow is Pentecost (Whitsunday) in the Western Church. If you have our liturgical color Jerusalem Cross pins, and wish to follow the calendar tomorrow would be Red.
Regardless of which pin you wear, my earnest prayer is that you take yourself and your family to a church tomorrow that feeds you the Word and Sacrament, and reminds you that Christ has NOT left us as orphans.
Just days after his ascension, Christ did exactly what He promised his disciples he would do, and sent his Holy Spirit upon his Church with power. "And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you." - Romans 8:11
This is our sure hope.

The American chestnut was the dominant tree of the eastern US forest for thousands of years. One in every four trees in the Appalachians was a chestnut. Then, between 1904 and 1940, a fungal blight from Asia killed roughly four billion of them. The species nearly went extinct as a forest tree within a single human lifetime. The recovery effort is now in its fourth decade. The American Chestnut Foundation breeds disease-resistant hybrids by crossing American chestnuts with blight-resistant Chinese chestnuts, then backcrossing for generations to recover the American tree's form. Other researchers have used gene editing to insert a wheat gene that detoxifies the blight. The first restoration plantings are alive and growing in the Appalachians. They won't be mature for another 50 years. None of the people who started this work will see it finished, but we should all be glad they're doing it.

Rebekah Merkle relays this story in her book. In classic Wilson fashion, she twists reality to excuse the behavior. Her reasoning is basically this: -By wanting to set aside the thick philosophy books and long lectures to pursue life as wives and mothers, these women were disrespecting the very roles they desired. -Why? Because they were implying that you do not need a rigorous philosophical education to be a good wife or mother. And somehow, that is the feminist view. But there are obvious problems with this... -Again, set aside the fact that a visibly creepy male professor is offering to make “For Breeding Purposes Only” shirts for people’s daughters and sisters. -Notice what is presented as the cure for these “breeder” women: college. Preferably, the college where N.D. teaches, and Rebekah's husband gets a paycheck.

A few weeks ago, my daughter was speaking with a recent New Saint Andrews graduate. The NSA grad told her she used to be a big fan of @Brian_Sauve and his family, until she went to NSA. That was where she supposedly realized Brian and his wife were derelict parents who had “pulled the ladder up behind them” by not allowing their daughters to go to college. She went on to explain that she grew up in a household that practiced head coverings, and that she supported the practice until she went to NSA. Her family still practices head coverings, but she no longer wears them (though she admittedly feels guilt over it). She has also moved into her own apartment so she is no longer under the headship of her Christian father. My daughter’s reply was: “Well, you are unbelievably wrong about the Sauvés, wrong about head coverings, and you seem to have a lot in common with the feminists NSA claims to fight. But my dad would not want me to argue with you about this, so I am going to go join that line dance. Have a good night.” When my Daughter came home, she hit on 3 things: 1. It was really hard to hear her say things about the Sauve's after they have been such a blessing to us. 2. She kept portraying herself as some free and educated woman, but she seems guilty, sad, and miserable. 3. I knew that if argued with her about head coverings, you would not be happy with me. Which kind of defeats the purpose of a head covering. I love her.
