I do consider West Virginia to be a Southern state but this is highly controversial in some corners, even among many West Virginians.

This. I can’t believe schools did away with teaching cursive. It was part of the general surrender to the EdTech lobby. Handwritten work is especially needed now in the age of AI Slop.

The best thing we can do for our kids right now is to just let them be kids. Kids are getting cell phones sooner than any generation before them, screen times are up while real human connection is down, and foundational skills aren’t being taught enough these days. We need to take a step back. It’s why I just signed a bipartisan bill into law, requiring cursive handwriting to once again be taught in PA public schools. It’s also why I’ve called on the legislature to pass a bill requiring schools to both implement a bell-to-bell cell phone ban and guarantee recess for every Pennsylvania student. Let’s continue our work to set young people on a path to success — and let our kids be kids.

@prseverson The UPCNA also did that because they were having money issues. A larger footprint maybe helps them.

@WVPitt Most likely they would have been assimilated into the PCUSA in the 1958 merger. The UPC's were outnumbered around 10 to 1. Adding in the ARP wouldn't have changed the ratio that much.

A great "what if" in my mind as an ARP is what would have been the future if proposed merger of northern/Midwest UPCNA and southern ARP in 1904 or 1951 had taken.
Didn't happen in 1904 because of "regional differences" or 1951 because of ARP's concern about liberalism in UPCNA.

@GeraldMarkJames Well, the Marrow was banned in the CoS so it would be hard to imagine that ministers of the CoS now in the colonies would be favorable toward it. :)

The first two Seceder ministers in the country were condemned as being "dangerous schismatics" by the General Assembly Presbyterians (descending from Makemie) who said they, ". . . taught error concerning the gospel offer and the nature of faith."

What the early Seceders found when they got to the colonies: "These petitioners were chiefly emigrants from Scotland. . . not finding among Presbyterians in America, that strict regard to those principles which they believed the word of God required, could not unite with them."

@IVMiles Mostly because when I did Civil War Re-Enacting all the cool events were in Virginia and the people from North Carolina would come up there and do them on the actual battlefields (or nearby).

wait why would civil war reenactments be problematic at all. how is re-enacting a war the south lost even about southern pride? half the guys out there are in union uniforms! civil war re-enactment happens all around the country!

@WVPitt I have thought about the almost mergers of the OPC and PCA in the 80s and how would that have changed things. I think it's interesting that despite all of the division in the different forms/types of Presbyterianism in the US they seem to look at merging more often than expected
