With no end in sight I am genuinely concerned about what Putin might do when his own survival, and that of his family and allies, is potentially on the line. Russian history is not exactly known for "peaceful transitions of power" outside of the collapse of the USSR and those in power have looted a lot of wealth so they too know they will be at risk when the "next guy" wants to establish that he is a man of the people by recovering the ill-gotten gains and eliminating his political rivals. Ask yourself if you were going to lose everything and see your family treated like dogs if you would use tactical nuclear weapons to prevent it, especially when you believe your cause to be just as Putin does. We need to find an off-ramp for this conflict soon because the stark reality has NEVER changed. A nation that possesses the most nuclear weapons on Earth can NEVER be conquered by an opponent who has none. If you think France or the UK will risk a nuclear exchange with Russia over the Ukraine you are sadly mistaken, especially if they just use very small yield theater size strikes. Hope I am wrong about this, but it has been my primary concern from the outset of Putin's ill-conceived and poorly executed invasion.
