Muhammad Ali knocks out Cleveland Williams, 1966 at the Houston Astrodome. Generally regarded as one of the greatest sporting images of all time. "Everyone assumes the picture I took of Ali v Liston in 1965 is my favorite, and it has even been called the greatest sports photograph of all time. But my absolute favorite photograph that I've ever taken is Ali v Williams, without question. It's the only one of my photographs hanging in my home. I've captured a vast range of subjects throughout my career, from Charles Manson to the pope, but I've never produced a better photograph than this. I took a gamble, hoping for a spectacular knockout. I knew it happened in a great spot, but I had no idea how it would turn out until the film was developed." We all know Ali's story, and some consider this his greatest performance, yet Williams had been inactive for the entire year of 1965 while recovering from gunshot wounds he suffered at the hands of a police officer during a traffic stop. Reports about the incident varied, and Williams barely survived, sustaining permanent kidney damage and nerve damage from the bullet, which affected his left leg above the knee and led to atrophy. Williams, however, harbored no ill will toward the policeman, as some believed he had resisted arrest due to suspected drunk driving. Despite his greatly diminished physical condition, Williams fought for the heavyweight championship against Muhammad Ali on November 14, 1966, but was stopped in the third round. He retired from boxing after the Ali bout but later made a comeback. While able to defeat journeyman fighters, he suffered several knockout losses before retiring for good in 1972. Williams concluded his career with a record of 78 wins (58 KOs), 13 losses, and 1 draw. In 2003, he was ranked 49th in Ring Magazine's list of the 100 greatest punchers of all time. In the 1980s, Ring Magazine reported that he worked as a forklift truck driver for a period. Sadly, in 1999, Cleveland Williams was killed in a hit-and-run accident.
