@MuyoSan So from what I understand, they were previously allowed to call FFMP, milk (by NAFDAC definition) because it had a portion of skimmed milk powder within it. However, as it is now formulated as "creamer", they are not allowed to call it "milk", as there is little to no milk in it.

so what? did they stop producing WMP and pivot to FFMP to save cost of production?? or they've been producing FFMP all along under the guise of WMP?? (as per the "Cowbell Our Milk" tagline)

@Bawzz_lady @wearegst I guess they are aware that Nigerian taste palettes are accustomed to high sodium, so they make their bullion cubes higher in sodium to "fit" the nigerian palettes, disregarding the health implications.

This company knows Nigerians are already genetically predisposed to HBP but somehow they are ok with formulating like this. Like what is the capitalist incentive to have more sodium in a black country than none. A country that already overwhelmingly use that product
gst@wearegst

No. Maggi bouillon in Nigeria reaches up to 25g sodium/100g. That’s nearly 60% above the WHO benchmark for bouillon (15g/100g) and the EU’s maggi bouillon formulations. Nestlé’s double standards and NAFDAC’s laxity is causing harm to Nigerians.

@UwailaR @BigBadReni But they used that tagline for decades, that brand awareness (arguably misleading) does not evaporate because the stopped 3 years ago.

The sheer number of checkpoints on that road to Cotonou sha… I’d probably be more likely to frequent Cotonou if I could go by ferry or boat or something.

Recently, at a retail outlet Cashier: "What's that? I've been seeing people buying it and meaning to ask", she said, pointing to the block of unsalted butter in my basket. Me: "It's butter" Cashier: "Really? Is it like a special type, different from Blue Band and the like?" Me: "No, it's actual butter, the others aren't" Cashier: 'What's the difference?" I proceed to give a brief explainer.
obianujuaku@obianujuaku101

And also, these are not butter and honestly, they’ve not claimed to be. However, a lot of Nigerians don’t know this. The average Nigerian doesn’t know what real butter tastes like.

@MuyoSan @phoenixx_chi A large-scale Nigerian butter brand is hard to come by, largely due to limited surplus milk availability and a reliable cold chain for processing and distribution. Butter is available in parts of the North though, but it tends to be produced on a small, more localised scale.

@phoenixx_chi @MuyoSan The packaging isn't always the case, you have to read the label and make sure it says "butter" and not "spread". You can also confirm with the ingredients list.

@Deji_TA @MuyoSan I used to buy President but i never liked the packaging because it's only a wrap of paper and starts to look messy after a while. Lately i started buying one of those contained brands on the shelf because "cheaper". Penny wise.......

@DoubleEph @Engr_Series @yojora Yeah and the use of "milk" is actually quite political in the EU, as farmers are very guarded about the use of the word.

The key question to ask here is this - is anyone in Nigeria selling filled milk and labelling it as “milk”? That would be wrong and like someone selling juice from concentrate and calling it natural juice. If it’s labelled as filled milk, then that’s fine. But saying the EU does not consider something as milk in a way that sounds like the EU is saying FFMP is fake or dangerous is really not right. They are saying you should not call a dog a cat not because cats are evil but because a dog is simply not a cat

So, the summary of the milk or no milk: In Europe, “milk” is legally defined as the natural mammary secretion from animals, with nothing added or removed. Products like fat-filled milk powder (FFMP), where dairy fat is replaced with vegetable oil, cannot legally be marketed as “milk” and must be labeled as a dairy-based product. In Nigeria, NAFDAC permits such products under names like “Filled Milk,” allowing them as a more affordable source of nutrition, provided they are properly labeled.

@phoenixx_chi @MuyoSan It's not bad or poisonous. Spreads/margarine are sold all over the world, and are seen as cheaper substitutes to Butter. Butter just generally has more natural nutrients than spreads.

@phoenixx_chi @MuyoSan Also check for the ingredients list. If it's not over 90% of butter/milk, then it's not butter (at least in the traditional sense).

@phoenixx_chi @MuyoSan Look out for labels that say "butter" when you go to a large supermarket. They are usually significantly more expensive as they are often imported.

@Deenike Exactly the nutritional value is the most important. And many of the cheaper substitutes tend to be fortified with nutrients.

Love that I’ve just seen this tweet. It literally speaks to food cultures. The average Nigerian is using butter/spread etc for the same purpose. Milk/FFMP etc for the same purpose. Nomenclature is less a problem vs nutritional literacy.
aisha(mrs)🇵🇸@intaa_0

How will you buy blue band and think you are buying butter??? They clearly write “spread for bread” “for cooking, baking and spreading” and market it as freaking vegetable oil enriched with blah blah blah, which one is “fake” again 😭😭😭
