The man invoking Abacha and NADECO to express outrage about democratic backsliding is the same man whose presidential vehicle, the ADC, just imploded because the people he brought into it ignored their own party’s constitution on succession. The APC put it plainly: the crisis was utterly self-inflicted, caused by people who parachuted into the party and took over without reference to the constitutional stipulation about how leadership is ordered in that party. This is the democratic movement Peter Obi joined to rescue Nigeria. Let us be even more precise about what actually happened. INEC removed the David Mark led ADC National Working Committee from its portal after the Court of Appeal dismissed David Mark’s own interlocutory appeal and ordered all parties to maintain the status quo pending resolution at the Federal High Court. This was not a government crackdown. This was not Abacha. This was a court order that INEC followed. The institution Peter Obi is implying has become tyrannical was literally obeying a judge. So the full picture is this. Peter Obi joins a party. The party’s leadership crisis lands in court. A court issues an order. INEC complies with the court order. Peter Obi posts about Abacha. That is not commentary on democracy. That is a man whose 2027 presidential platform just suffered a serious legal setback dressing his personal political frustration in the language of human rights. Abacha detained journalists. Abacha executed Ken Saro-Wiwa. Abacha ran a regime of assassinations and disappearances. Comparing that to INEC following a Court of Appeal ruling in a party leadership dispute is not historical insight. It is an insult to everyone who actually suffered under that regime, and it is the kind of comparison that should embarrass anyone with a serious understanding of Nigerian political history. The NADECO activists he is invoking did not fight so that decades later their legacy could be borrowed to complain about a court supervised party registration dispute. They fought against something real. What Peter Obi is experiencing is the consequence of his own party’s constitutional recklessness catching up with him in court. Power indeed reveals character. He wrote that himself. What this post reveals is a man who reaches for the most dramatic possible framing the moment his own interests are threatened, regardless of whether the facts support the comparison. Abacha did not lose a court case and get removed from an INEC portal. Peter Obi’s party did. That is the actual story. Everything else is theatre.

What an irony of history, that the acclaimed defenders of democracy and human rights who claimed to have fought for democracy during the era of General Sani Abacha now find themselves worse than the man they opposed. Peter Obi just secured sympathy votes for Tinubu with that post. Many of us were already outraged by the incident in Jos. Whenever I feel like criticizing this government more strongly, Peter Obi reminds me that he could be even worse. I would rather stick with Tinubu than support someone who seems inconsistent and unclear in his stance. Obi will never be President of Nigeria.
