Another example of the crazy winds at Wrigley Field yesterday. Moisés Ballesteros hit a ball that looked nowhere near getting out. However, in normal conditions it would have traveled 68 feet further and most likely landed in the basket for a homer.

I’m fine if the Big 12 Wrestling Championships stay in Tulsa. But every year without fail I leave with the SAME thoughts. What I struggle with is that downtown Tulsa doesn’t seem to fully lean into the tournament. Restaurants/bars (including the hotels) around BOK Center close around 10 p.m., which is exactly when fans and media are finally leaving the arena. There’s clearly a big influx of people and money that weekend, but a lot of it feels left on the table. On Friday I ended up ordering Papa John’s and didn’t eat until 1 a.m. I would’ve much rather supported a local place but I literally didn’t have a choice! Moving the tournament to Fri/Sat was a great first step. But someone needs to be responsible for connecting the event with surrounding businesses. When I worked in corporate events, it cost us $0 to coordinate with hotels and nearby bars to stay open later for guests. There’s a reason Kansas City is such a great host for the basketball tournament. You leave the arena and the city is alive. Fans everywhere, businesses packed late. You can have that even without Power & Light District. Like seriously you’d have no idea there’s a wrestling tournament in town if you hit that area around 11 p.m. The State tournament in Des Moines makes more noise Downtown than what Tulsa feels like. In Tulsa, it feels like a ghost town. I honestly have no clue where fans go after sessions. Except Iowa State fans. Coach Dresser usually hosts socials for traveling fans. Maybe other schools do that too?
