There's one moment from the liberation of Bucha that will stay with me for the rest of my life. At the entrance to the city from the Irpin side, near the railway line, there's a very nice and cozy apartment complex, I once wanted to buy an unfinished flat there, but it was out of my price range. When we returned to Bucha alongside Ukrainian forces, that same complex had been badly hit. The Russians had positioned artillery in the courtyards nearby, so shell and fuse crates were scattered everywhere. Burnt, torn-off BMP tracks lay strewn around. In the parking lots, among mountains of debris and wreckage, Teslas burned to the ground. Nearby, rows of small buildings with little shops, cafes, bakeries, riddled with bullets, looted and torched. All around -- grayness, darkness, the feeling of an exhumed grave, as if you could feel with your very skin that something evil had happened here. And there, on the basketball court, a man was wandering aimlessly in silence. Just walking in circles, over and over again. He still couldn't come back to himself. All 33 days of the occupation he had hidden in a basement right there under those buildings, literally right under the Russians' noses, hiding so as not to end up among those who, as captured on camera, were marched in single file with their hands behind their heads and taken around a corner to be shot. But that guy was lucky. Several days had passed since the Russians left, and he was still walking there in circles, in silence. I tried to talk to him, to ask if he needed anything, and he raised his eyes to me and said: "Do you know why they hate us so much?" He started to sob, wiping away tears. "Do you know? Tell me, why, why, what did we do to them? Tell me." I think that evening I came home to Kyiv after a day in the field reporting on the atrocities in Bucha, and for the first time in a long time, I got drunk.

russian troops invaded Bucha on February 27, 2022. The city remained under occupation for 4 weeks. In those 4 weeks, over 500 innocent people were executed by the invaders. 4 years ago, Ukraine’s defenders liberated Bucha. Remember those who didn’t live to see the day🕯️

Bucha has come to symbolise the cruelty of Russia’s war. Of the civilians killed, many were shot at close range. Some with their hands tied behind their backs. Four years after these mass killings, we remember the victims. What happened here cannot be denied. The EU is committed to ensuring that these crimes do not go unpunished, including by supporting the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression, alongside the Claims Commission. Russia must be held accountable for what it has done to Ukraine.

It is good to be in Kyiv today with European Foreign Ministers. Each visit is a powerful reminder of Ukraine’s courage and resilience. Europe stands by your side. We will keep providing military, financial, energy, and humanitarian support. And we will do everything we can to ensure full accountability for Russia’s crimes.

Yes, Europe’s defense is powered by Ukrainian “housewives.” Ukrainian women are indeed an essential part of Ukraine’s war effort and of Europe’s security. They have stepped with courage into many areas once seen as male-dominated, bringing energy, discipline, and determination. Across the Defense Forces and the defense industry, they are driving positive change and helping develop new solutions guided by the most important standard of all – effectiveness on the battlefield. And they are doing this while raising our next generation and caring for their families under wartime pressures. I am honored to regularly meet women serving both on the front line and in defense production. Together with men, Ukrainian women are defending not only their homes, but also peace and stability across Europe. The people of Ukraine deserve not only utmost respect but to be heard – and learned from. #MadeByHousewives 🇺🇦

Helping an ally. The Belarusian dictator is not some “highly respected" leader, but a war criminal who assists Russia in its aggression and uses his own citizens as hostages to preserve his terrorist regime.

Today is a day every Belarusian knows – Freedom Day. And this is a day of the people who have yet to win real independence and genuine security for themselves. Belarus has experienced difficult twists and turns in its history, and the reality is that Europe's attention to Belarus was insufficient at critical moments. But Belarus cannot be lost. And the Belarusian people should certainly not be ignored. The fact that Lukashenko chose this very day for a trip to Pyongyang – further from his people and closer to his dream of lifelong family rule – speaks volumes about his intentions. Europe is a community of free peoples. There should be no place here for hereditary dictatorships. There should be no place here for regimes that profit from trading sovereignty and helping terror and aggression. Europe needs peace. And therefore, all European peoples need freedom without exception. We wish the Belarusian people freedom, and we thank those Belarusians who stand alongside Ukrainians in defending against Russian aggression. Žyvie Biełaruś!

March 25, 2026, marks 5 years since the arrest of Andrzej Poczobut, a Polish-Belarusian journalist, opposition activist, and political prisoner. Poczobut was detained by the Belarusian KGB at his home in Hrodna following a search. The Belarusian prosecutor’s office accused him of inciting national hatred, rehabilitating Nazism, and calling for sanctions. On February 8, 2023, he was sentenced to 8 years in prison. Although Lukashenko’s regime released several large groups of political prisoners starting in 2025, Poczobut’s name, repeatedly mentioned in release lists, remains imprisoned. Polish Interior Minister Mariusz Kamiński recently stated that Poland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and intelligence services are actively working on securing his release. In 2025, Poczobut was awarded the Sakharov Prize for opposing the authoritarian regime of Lukashenko and also received the Order of the White Eagle, Poland’s highest state decoration. Andrzej Poczobut wrote in one of his letters: "I do not need any pardons. I do not intend to appeal or ask for anything. Even if they try to pressure me."
