There's a nice word for this, found in both German and Japanese. In German, it's “Fachidiot” and in Japanese “senmon-baka” (専門馬鹿). Specialist-idiot=someone so narrow-minded and blinkered in their research focus as to make them foolish. In medicine, we have lots of 'em.
