We in the Trump Administration take very seriously our obligation to safeguard US sovereignty and to ensure that the only laws governing Americans are the laws duly enacted by our elected representatives under our Constitution. This means, among other things, making sure that "international law" norms often made up out of whole cloth by foreigners outside our constitutional structure aren't accorded the force of law in US courts. In this regard, we're delighted that the US Supreme Court has now clarified (in Cisco Sys., Inc. v. Doe, link below) that the so-called Alien Tort Statute of 1789 doesn't authorize US federal courts to create new causes of action for alleged violations of international law. Some lower federal courts started claiming such authority in the 1980s and until now the US Supreme Court had left the matter somewhat ambiguous. In my current position, I've witnessed ominous efforts around the world to craft novel "international law" norms, and am relieved that our Administration persuaded the Supreme Court (see link below for brief) to close the door on giving any such norms the force of law in US courts. In our constitutional system, the power to create new causes of action belongs to Congress--not the courts and certainly not international organizations or other foreign entities.

The US private sector may be the most dynamic force the world has ever known. One of the @StateDept's top priorities is to work with the private sector to identify economic and commercial opportunities abroad to promote prosperity through mutually advantageous deals. In particular, we’re working to expand markets for US exports of both goods and services, and facilitate US investments abroad that align with our national priorities. Among the tools that Congress has created to further these objectives are the Development Finance Corporation (@DFCgov), which promotes private sector investments abroad that advance our policy goals, and the Millennium Challenge Corporation (@MCCgov), which helps create the physical and regulatory infrastructure abroad necessary to support such investments. The Secretary of State serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors of both entities, and I'm honored that @SecRubio has tasked me with representing him in both capacities. Under the leadership of @POTUS @realDonaldTrump and @SecRubio, we recognize that our country's economic and commercial interests are key pillars of our foreign policy. And it’s a personal privilege for me, as my father started his diplomatic career as Commercial Attaché at our Embassy in Montevideo, Uruguay, some 70 years ago, and drilled into me the centrality of economic and commercial interests in foreign policy. 💪🇺🇸

As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of our magnificent Declaration of Independence, let’s not forget that diplomacy helped transform that document’s promise into reality. But for the efforts of our first and greatest diplomat, Benjamin Franklin, at the court of Louis XVI in France, the American Revolution could have had a very different outcome. @ChrisLandauUSA You had a great dad, I was young when he was Ambassador down here, but yet I remember him as a fair man.

My family’s American story began exactly 85 years ago today. On July 1, 1941, the S.S. Santa Lucia docked in New York harbor after a 9-day voyage from Buenaventura, Colombia. On board was a 21-year named George Landau, who had fled Austria for Colombia in 1938, was hired there by the Otis Elevator Company, and then transferred to their New York office. He is listed on the ship’s manifest as a “Secretary,” and spoke English, Spanish, and German. He went on to volunteer for the US army after Pearl Harbor, became an American citizen in 1943, fought in Europe in WWII, and later became a 3-time US Ambassador. George Landau was my father, and July 1 was always a special day for him. God bless America! 🇺🇸

The Hall of Flags in the State Department’s main lobby, which displays the flags of all nations with which we have diplomatic relations, is one of my favorite places. When I was a boy, I used to accompany my father to the office on Saturday mornings and marvel at all the different flags. In honor of the 250th anniversary of independence this week, we’ve unveiled a new look to honor our own country. It’s a good reminder of who we work for—the American people! 🇺🇸

Jamás le escuché decir que iba a escuchar a aquellos que prometen “incendiar” al país en vez de estrechar la mano de vuelta para el bien de todos. La persona del video no parece manifestar ningún interés en reconciliación ni en una transición democrática respetando la voz del pueblo expresada en las urnas. Al contrario, parece ser una persona llena de odio explícitamente llamando a la violencia política, y tales personas no son bienvenidas de huéspedes en nuestro país. Pero obviamente lo vamos a investigar. Gracias por estar atento a este tema de nuestro sistema consular. 🇺🇸🇨🇴
