@Starman064 Plus the lower mass reduces long term stress on the aft support structures, which helps with long term preservation! The RS-25 on display next to the orbiter is a complete real engine, though admittedly I am not familiar with its specific history for the one at KSCVC.

@Starman064 The RSMEs on the orbiters are actually really cool bits of kit! They’re older nozzles that had been decommissioned, and as the powerheads in the orbiters wouldn’t be visible, NASA elected to keep them for use on SLS, and mounted the old nozzles using a lighter adapter.

@hammen Everything you have just said is the exact same arguments made 5 years ago that ULA would be dead by 2025

@DerekdotSpace Oh, their immediate future is OK, due to Kuiper and current NSSL contracts. But with no reusability, they can't compete against multiple vehicles that are. Plus their cost plus co-owners don't want to invest more $$$ into the company. Future looking not so bright, IMHO.

A bit unexpected given past attempts to hire Tory had not bore fruit, however with Vulcan now fully on its feet and certified for NSSL it makes sense that he’d be more comfortable leaving the role behind.

We’re pleased to announce that @torybruno is joining Blue Origin as president, National Security, reporting to CEO Dave Limp. Tory will spearhead our newly formed National Security Group.

@hammen I really think people are massively ignorant of the investments made into ULA the past 4-5 years, especially from Amazon. I have seen claim after claim of death knell for ULA, but with their manifest booked solid for Vulcan they’re in an incredibly healthy position right now.

@DerekdotSpace Tory departing for Blue to work on their NSSL certification pretty much means the death knell for ULA in 4-5 years. No reusability/expensive/can't scale. Blue will take a bigger portion of US .gov contracted launch services, eventually crowding out ULA.

Hearing reports of an unidentified red object flying over Cape Canaveral tonight at incredible speed. Anyone have any eyes in the sky on this merry evening? 🎄

Some interesting developments on yesterday’s H3 failure. S2 began to lose pressure right at Payload Fairing Sep, alongside a sudden acceleration spike. It’s possible that something went wrong with either the PLF or the Payload itself that impacted the upper stage LH2 tank.

About 5 minutes until the first launch attempt of HANBIT-Nano. This is the first orbital launch attempt for Innospace, as well as the first orbital launch attempt from Alcantara since VLS-1 V02 in 1999 youtube.com/live/RqGZ1mS5F…

Thank you. It has been a great privilege to lead ULA through its transformation and to bring Vulcan into service. My work here is now complete and I will be cheering ULA on.

The upper stage and payload are in a very low orbit and expected to deorbit naturally in the coming days. There is a hazard risk of the entry due to its uncontrolled nature and full load of propellant on the payload, though a major ground impact is not expected.

This puts the rocket now at a 5 for 7 record, and raises serious concerns over the vehicle’s reliability and build quality. I’d expect a significant stand down over the next few months for an investigation into their upper stage design as it is responsible for both failures.

H3 suffered its second failure last night. While information is still limited, the upper stage began to lose pressure during its first burn, ultimately resulting in the second burn failing just 5 seconds in.
