Son is displaying some pretty severe ADHD behavior along with his sensory processing stuff. Pediatrician gave me an evaluation to fill out. Nurse called me back today. Here’s how the convo went. Nurse (super nice): so Dr said it does look like he’s showing some early signs of ADHD. Dr wants to repeat the evaluation in November after he starts school so the teacher can get to know him and fill out the eval. Me: okay and what if we’re homeschooling? Nurse (super rude): uh. IS that what you’re doing? Me: yeah that’s why I said that Nurse (even more rude): okay well if that’s the case then this (the ADHD) doesn’t even matter Me: ……. Like what the heck?? Does ADHD only affect kids negatively when they’re in public school? I hung up the phone after she said that.

Come Follow Me was first introduced to the Youth classes. About a year prior, the Fundamentals of Preach My Gospel had been introduced into Mission fields including The First Twelve Weeks training. The youth CFM curriculum had a theme for each month and not coincidentally, these were focused on the fundamental doctrines nearly identical to the missionary fundamentals. I got home from my mission and was immediately called as Young Men's President with my buddies who had just returned home as my councilors called by the Bishop. Jan- The Godhead Feb- The Plan of Salvation March- The Atonement of Jesus Christ April- The Apostasy and Restoration May- Prophets and Revelation June- Priesthood and Priesthood Keys July- Ordinances and Covenants Aug- Marriage and Family Sep- Commandments Oct- Becoming more Christlike Nov- Spiritual and Temporal Self Reliance Dec- Building the Kingdom of God in the Latter Days There weren't explicit lesson outlines or anything. Each month had a set of "questions of the soul" such as "Who is God?" "How can I get to know Him?" "Why do we need Prophets?" "How can I receive revelation?" The whole format encouraged questions, conversation and diving into the doctrine in the scriptures and Preach My Gospel and helping teach the youth how to search the scriptures to find those answers for themselves. In 2015, a regional conference introduced the concept of CFM for adults alongside Ward Councils as Ministering and practice examples through role play. Shortly after, the Bishop asked me to teach CFM as a Gospel Doctrine class. We had many adults loitering in the halls during Sunday School at the time because the one Gospel Doctrine class was always full and they weren't getting much out of it besides the same lecture word for word from the manual. There was no CFM curriculum for adults released at the time. So I prepared the same way I had for the youth, I studied what had been given (in this case the old standard works manuals) and tried to find the core doctrine from CFM in that lesson. I always began classes asking if there were any questions or anything that stood out in their studies that week. Then I waited for what felt to me uncomfortably long. This was time for the Spirit to work on those who had something to share or ask and who normally wouldn't have in a lecture. I'd say more than half the time, our lessons focused on someone's "question of the soul" and the doctrine and principles that applied to it. Often, this still tied directly into the biblical passages and lesson as well. Always my goal was to Teach People, Not Lessons, and to "find the one" that soul with a question who just needed some loving help without judgement in a small class setting. Amazingly, this scaled. After awhile the class had 30-40 regular attendees, and still people were willing to ask the questions that troubled them without fear of judgement. Often, the Spirit was present teaching each of us what we needed that week.

@AntHoneyJakes @NoblestCalling Yeah, I remember when it was first introduced teachers were encouraged to prayerfully select a few topics from the lessons to teach in class, not to cover 2 full weeks of material in one class. But it seems like everyone does it differently everywhere 😆

I am undecided about whether or not I like the change, however, if you think about it, you're covering the exact same amount of material. Because right now you're supposed to cover 2 weeks of Come Follow Me in 50 minutes

If they are restricting from Robinhood and SoFi it's because X Money will have retail investing available, and they don't want to feed their competitors in the retail investment market. As soon as I can, I'm getting my Savings switched from SoFi to X Money. Once IRA and stock investments are available, I'm moving those over too. Almost without fail, a company with "democratizing X" turns into corporatism and gimmicks real quick.

We had 4-5 people that needed GF in our old ward. 1 family where none of the kids could have egg yolks, soy etc. The bishop ended up finding some bread that worked for everyone, bought a bunch of it and stowed it in the church freezer. Our current ward uses GF chex in a separate bag or sometimes sacrament cups, seems to be every other week or so.

My ward switched to only gluten free bread for sacrament. Anybody else seeing that in your ward?

We were both incorrect. Schools in fact conduct their OWN testing and diagnosis. I should've remembered this. The public school system in my area can't acknowledge the psychological diagnosis of my son's autism and they require their own testing and evaluation process to diagnose him as autistic in the public school system. It is asinine, but it IS public school policy.

It is by being willing to make idiotic statements, and humbly accepting criticism (even when the criticizer is far from well meaning) that we can best be educated. Our education system punishes asking stupid questions and giving wrong answers, so many recoil and fear being wrong and never get the chance to learn.

To be clear, I'm not saying ADHD isn't a real concern. I think it is over diagnosed in public school systems due to childless teachers that can't differentiate between boys and girls. That is likely why you're getting the weird response from the nurse. The combination of sensory and ADHD symptoms in your boy points to a higher likelihood he is in fact autistic. Test for that and get him on leucovorine. Vitamin B9 in a form his brain can get even if he has the MTHFR gene mutation, virtually no side effects since it is a vitamin with a different brain delivery mechanism.

@DescendingChime @mom_of_littles As a mom of an ADHD boy, this language is what stoped me from seeking help for years. Trust your gut. Sometimes it’s more than “boy energy.” We are one week on meds and it’s the best choice we could’ve made.

Consider going for folinic acid supplements instead of any medication. If he also has sensory processing issues it sounds like he could be somewhere on the autism spectrum. Ask for leucovorine. It is folinic acid in pill form and does require a subscription because it bypasses the path to the brain that is blocked by the MTHFR Gene mutation that is being found frequently in kids with autism. You should see the symptoms of both ADHD and sensory processing decrease rapidly, with maximal benefits after 6-9 months of daily dosage. You can also increase foods naturally high in folate/folinic acid such as leafy greens, corn, avocado, citrus fruits but won't see as much of a benefit if he has the MTHFR gene mutation.

@mom_of_littles I have some strong feelings about this topic that aren’t relevant, but please please please read Talking Back to Ritalin before you make the choice to medicate. It was INCREDIBLY eye opening for me and explained a lot of funky health stuff for me after being medicated 6-24
