We were at a birthday party the other day where the fire truck came. One of the dads asked the fireman why the truck says "Stay Back 343 Feet" and he explained it's to represent the 343 firemen who died in 9/11. Then a kid asked what 9/11 was and I saw his life flash before his eyes wondering if he was going to have to explain 9/11 to a bunch of 4 year olds

@OtherworldJamie Yeah I think a lot of it is trying to make up for the potential you think you wasted in your youth. I definitely feel the same inclinations but actively try to hedge against letting them make me crazy lol

@NoblestCalling I'm super proud of my buddy for everything he works to give his family. But I also think he's trying to make up for things he missed out on in his own childhood. And I miss camping with his whole family. My family didn't do a ton, but best memories were camping and walks.

School M-F and travel sports on the weekends means your kids get almost no unstructured play time, the thing that kids consistently rate as the most desirable activity. In my view this means your kids basically don't get a childhood. Travel sports are essentially a vanity project for parents in my opinion.
Chris Orzechowski@chrisorzy

Travel sports: - guaranteed family time every weekend - tour the entire country, see the sights - kids gain athletic skills and priceless memories - chance at scholarships/NIL money - kids stay out of trouble - make friends with people in town This is supposed to be “bad”?

@TheFoxMatriarch I have 4; my parents managed 2 kids quite well but now if we plan trips we will probably split them up among them and other relatives

How do people with 5+ kids have grandparents that watch them? Like my parents aren't young enough to keep up with that many kids especially when they're young. I'm always amazed by big family influencers going on like week long vacations but leaving the kids with the grandparents

Sometimes you just get the frozen personal pizzas at Costco cause they are on sale and ignore the ingredients and then your kids treat you like a rockstar 😂

@NoblestCalling Also: 1) it’s expensive as hell and 2) you don’t get a summer vacation. My boys were told if they missed any practices in the summertime they would not play.

I had a homeschool coop student during our Horatius at the Bridge class ask me what rape was… (in reference to Lucretia) I told him it was an attack, and to talk to him mom for more details. He was younger than all the other students and his mom really pushed to have him in the class, since he was “advanced”. That’s the year I realized that I need to trust my intuition a lot more.

Met someone recently Father of 2, works in tech sales, wife is a consultant Says “we’re actually going to move to Europe next year” I asked if they have EU passports He says no I asked which of their companies are going to transfer/sponsor them He says they’re not going to tell their employers I asked how long they planned to be in Europe then He said indefinitely… just put the kids in local schools and enjoy their mornings given the time difference.. live a “simpler life” with less stress I then explained.. almost waiting for him to reveal the joke.. that they can’t just “move to Europe” and drop their kids in school and get cheap healthcare. They need to be citizens or have visas… formally update their residency… be legitimately employed locally… not to mention legit docs for things like landlord approvals… the list went on. He wasn’t joking, apparently. This grown adult thought they could just “move to Europe” illegally… and he didn’t even think about the legality of it at all Apparently he’s a “doer” type guy who just makes things happen Good luck to him

@ToddLlewellyn If you are trying sushi for the first time your best bet is to find a friend who really likes it and let them pick the restaurant and order for you. A bad sushi place is far, far worse than no sushi at all

Very disturbing fashion thing happening wherein any dress that isn't explicitly office attire or clubwear is labeled as "infantilizing" and "not for grown women."

When women say they don't like a male hobby, you must translate this to, "I feel anxious if I see my boyfriend/husband spending time on a surrogate activity rather than a tangible achievement, because I feel our resources are insecure, and like he isn't prioritising my needs." If a woman feels safe with you, and knows you have things taken care of, she won't care about you spending the occasional hour a week on Rome Total War.
Lizzie Marbach@LizzieMarbach

I know this is unpopular, but it will always be unattractive for a grown man to play video games. Some women might be understanding or pretend like they don’t care that you spend hours playing, but they do. It is extremely unattractive to women and will never not be. 🤷🏼‍♀️
