From homes to hawker stalls, the poor are paying the price of political arrogance. Bengal does not believe in bulldozer politics. The land of Tagore and Netaji cannot be ruled through fear, force, and demolition drives against ordinary citizens. What we are witnessing today is an attack on the dignity of the people of Bengal- daily wage workers, street vendors, small shopkeepers, and struggling families who have built their lives brick by brick. The massive eviction drive around Howrah Station, the unrest and anger erupting on the streets of Tiljala and Park Circus, and the growing desperation among those suddenly stripped of shelter and livelihood expose a government more obsessed with optics than humanity. A government that demolishes first and listens later has forgotten the very spirit of Bengal. Real progress is measured by how a state treats its weakest citizens, not by how quickly it can erase them. Bulldozers cannot become the language of governance in a state built on culture, compassion, and resistance to oppression.

When India cancelled the OCI of the writer and journalist Aatish Taseer in 2019 — I said the following (see secreenshots) in response to many in India who thought this wasn’t worth worrying about because he was ‘privileged’ since he lived outside India. If people think that only targeting of regime critics within India is worth paying attention to (and people in the rest of the world stay generally indifferent to the fate of regime critics of India) – it will ultimately mean decreasing ability to draw attention to what’s going on in India, both in India, and in the world. As I said back then, naturalising the hierarchies of supposedly legitimate targeting or discrimination is never helpful, and it’s *always a slippery slope*. Every year it gets worse. So, I’ll say it plainly again, if you think what’s happening to academics in India is important (and it should not matter whether the individual is privileged or not, ref Ashoka Univ academic Ali Khan Mahmudabad), as you should, take a step further and connect it to what’s happening to Indian origin academics, journalists, and authors outside the country whose work draws attention yo what’s happening within India, and are therefore sought to be silenced.  @AatishTaseer @Mahmudabad

This was not an attack on any one community; it was a calculated assault on Bengal’s social harmony, democratic fabric and the ordinary citizens who simply want to live in peace.
