The "Independent Artist" Illusion: Let’s Talk About SA’s Entertainment Royalty ☕️🔥 Let’s be honest for a second. We love to romanticise the "hustle" in South African music, but the playing field isn’t just uneven—it’s entirely rigged. Look at Thando Nje. Beautiful voice, incredible neo-soul vibe, and a 2023 Metro FM nomination. But when you find out her real name is Thando Sibanyoni, and her dad is the legendary taxi tycoon Joe "Ferrari" Sibanyoni—a man sitting on a massive 400-taxi empire—the narrative shifts. Suddenly, "Thando Nje nje" feels less like an artistic choice and more like a clever screen to hide a massive safety net. It makes you think about how many incredible, raw talents are getting iced out in the townships because they don't have the backing of a trust fund or a legacy surname. From DBN Gogo to Nciza’s son, the industry is heavily gatekept by nepotism and deep pockets. Can we blame them for using their privilege? Honestly, no. Any parent with power will clear a path for their child, and changing a surname isn't always about deceit—sometimes it’s a desperate attempt to be judged on your own merits instead of your family’s reputation. Connections can open the door, but they can't buy genuine soul or stage presence. The talent is there. Still, the frustration of the ordinary, unconnected artist is 100% valid. It’s hard to compete with people who are playing the game on "Easy Mode" while you’re singing just to put food on the table. Privilege doesn't mean you lack talent, but it absolutely means you didn't have to bleed for the spotlight. Are we supporting the music, or are we just buying into the marketing of well-connected trust-fund babies? 💔

For most of my life, I thought I was just failing at being “normal.” I grew up feeling emotionally neglected and misunderstood. I was raised mostly by my grandmother while trying to navigate life quietly on my own. Because I did well academically and seemed “high functioning,” nobody noticed how much I was actually struggling internally. As I got older, life became harder instead of easier. Simple things that seem manageable for other people started feeling overwhelming for me:
- consistency,
- focus,
- emotional regulation,
- burnout,
- impulsive decisions,
- exhaustion,
- struggling to function under pressure,
- and constantly feeling mentally overwhelmed while trying to survive financially. For years, I blamed myself.
I called myself lazy.
Broken.
Undisciplined. But recently I started learning more about ADHD and Autism in adults — especially in women who masked their struggles for years — and for the first time in my life, everything started making sense. I’m now trying to get a professional ADHD and Autism assessment so I can finally understand my brain properly, access support and start building a healthier future for myself instead of constantly surviving in confusion and burnout. I’ve been trying my best to keep going:
creating content,
building online,
sharing my story honestly,
and finding ways to survive independently despite feeling deeply overwhelmed. This assessment means more to me than just a diagnosis.
It means clarity.
Healing.
Understanding.
And hopefully a chance to finally stop feeling like I’m fighting my own mind every day. If you’ve ever connected with my story, my content or simply want to help me take one step closer toward getting proper support, I’d appreciate any donation so deeply — even sharing this post helps more than you know. Thank you for seeing me.
Thank you for helping me feel less invisible. 🤍🦋 backabuddy.co.za/campaign/autis…

@camagu4life @Kgadi_yaMoloto Mining people don't go to varsity. You get trained inside the industry. To be a mine superintendent, manager or overseer requires a competent A, B certificates and experience.

I still remember when I was working at American Swiss and his sister would come to pay her Tfg account, she would always tell me of how she’s taking clothes for her younger brother and she never complained even one bit. Best believe me that lady is living her best life now.🥹🤌🙏🏿❤️ And also they are givers in that family. Every time she comes to the shop, she would leave R100 for me.

Hey Xenophobe, Black South Africans are 81% of the population but own only 4% of privately held land. White South Africans are 7% yet own around 72% of that land. You don’t have land to protect. If anything, you are protecting the white man’s land as you languish in slums!

@DrRebrand But do they kill each other on sight, I don't think you understand how far tribalism goes in the North . We are not fighting over land here in SA. No tribe is kidnapping women and kids of other tribes.

@DiNinja2 I don't agree because there is a "superior" tribal group, also a minority tribal group. There is no way the two don't have a negative interface. We see which group gets platformed and preferences. We see which one tends to press and discriminate and how the other fights back.

This is not true. Tribalism was a tool of apartheid hence the creation of divisional provinces. There also is a superior tribe and minority tribes. Tribes compete and hate each other, even in the workplace. Decisions (voting e.g) have been proven to be influenced by tribal lines.
Phumudzo Makhani@makhanip

South Africa is the most tribally cohesive African nation on the continent, actually, too progressive There is no mainstream tribalism here, SAns of different tribes marry each other, work together and live side by side Try our neighbours up North, Kenya, Zim, Angola, Nigeria
