Honored to have an influx of foreign names I don't recognize. This account has wide ranging content for a spy book, medical, boobs, drugs, math and religion. I have hyperacusis and many concussions and tbi and other health issues. My abilities change. Nsfw, or public in general.

Give A Shit About Nature

One man in San Francisco has personally returned the California pipevine swallowtail to the city. Tim Wong is an aquarium biologist who noticed the butterfly had pretty much completely vanished from the area. The caterpillars can only eat one plant: the California pipevine, which was also disappearing. So he got cuttings from the botanical garden, propagated his own pipevine plants, built a backyard butterfly enclosure, and started with 20 caterpillars in 2012. He's now raised thousands. Every year since, more California pipevine swallowtails have been seen flying free in San Francisco. The population is recovering because of one guy and his back yard. Conservation at this scale doesn't always require a million-dollar foundation and government action. Sometimes it's just one person, one host plant, one species, one yard. What butterfly host plant are you growing this summer?

They literally 3D-printed an eyeball. And the blind guy can see again. Not a chip. Not a sensor. A full living human eye — retina, cornea, lens, optic nerve — built layer by layer in a printer. Bioengineers at KAIST in South Korea pulled it off. The whole thing took 6 hours to print. Living retinal cells stacked in precise layers with their own blood vessels. A hydrogel lens that auto-focuses. Biocompatible polymers shaping the white of the eye. And an optic nerve scaffold designed to guide fresh nerve growth straight to the brain. Then they put it inside a 31-year-old man who lost his sight 7 years ago in an industrial accident. Three weeks later, his brain started decoding the signals. He's now seeing at 20/60. Reading. Recognising faces. Naming colours. This is the first time a complex organ made of multiple tissue types has been printed AND successfully wired into the human nervous system. Science fiction quietly clocked out. Science just clocked in.

@hemo_shk 3 new things to me. I feel a little better about my lack of understanding. Thanks! Where is the air filled bowel?

Answer: Massive left-sided diaphragmatic hernia with herniation of bowel loops into the thorax, causing rightward mediastinal shift and compressive collapse of the left lung. Presence of air-filled bowel with haustral markings distinguishes it from tension pneumothorax and requires urgent surgical management.

Here's a failure of society.
TFTC@TFTC21

A peer-reviewed paper published last year in the journal Bioethics by two professors at Western Michigan University School of Medicine argues that it is "morally obligatory" to genetically engineer ticks to spread alpha-gal syndrome, a permanent condition that makes you violently allergic to red meat. The paper is called "Beneficial Bloodsucking." Their argument: if eating meat is morally wrong, then preventing the spread of a disease that forces people to stop eating meat is also morally wrong. Scientists should gene-edit lone star ticks to enhance their ability to carry alpha-gal syndrome and expand their range into urban environments to infect more people. They call this a "moral bioenhancer." They frame releasing genetically modified disease-carrying ticks as a "vaccination" that only "infringes" on your bodily autonomy rather than "violating" it. The distinction, apparently, is that a tick bit you instead of a government official holding you down. Alpha-gal syndrome is not mild. The CDC estimates up to 450,000 Americans are already affected. Cases have surged 100-fold in the last decade. Symptoms include anaphylaxis. There is no cure. Alpha-gal cases are exploding across the United States. The lone star tick's range is expanding far beyond its historical territory. And two academics at a medical school published a paper arguing this is a good thing that should be accelerated. At what point do we stop treating papers like this as fringe academic exercises and start asking whether anyone is already acting on them?

@hemo_shk Doc, I’m trying to learn from you guys. That's just what my very tired brain says. Blue I would guess is interstitial, the twist acting like a permanently fired muscle, orange a calcium full blood vessel servicing broken bones. Not my clearest observation

😂 I tried to follow your logic, but I honestly got lost somewhere between the “orange nutrient delivery” and the “blue twist for rigidity.” On a serious note, I couldn’t extract a clear anatomical or clinical interpretation from that description. Could you please rephrase it in a more structured medical way?

The literal #1 most suicidal belief you can have is that you’re an introvert/socially anxious/don’t like people. I was this guy until around 22. Thought I was better than everyone else and actively chose not to be social. Life completely changed when I started interacting with random people and just trying to make them laugh. Opportunities opened up, made relationships with people I never thought possible. Everything was just less dull and boring. Every day was fun for no reason. You cannot be a lone wolf. It’s a mental illness. Life is meaningless without people.
Goldie@dezgoldie

I believe in socializing basically 24/7. This has made me more money than anything else. High energy levels and constant social interaction.

@IhabFathiSulima Lots of breaks. Does the leg heal before the foot? Mid foot might benefit from some cleanup depending on ligaments. Guessing align leg and cast , nonweight bearing for a few weeks midfoot solidifies and toes heal. Reduced movement.
