REPORTER: “Are you willing to revise your statement regarding the snowball fight, given that this was not exactly a friendly back-and-forth snowball fight. The police that were there were not throwing any snowballs. They were getting pelted themselves..." "Would you consider banning these crowd-sourcing events because they can, and sometimes do, get out of hand?" MAYOR MAMDANI: "I'm not going to be banning snowball fights or organized snowball fights." “I've shared my thoughts with New Yorkers and I continue to believe that what we are seeing in this response this winter blizzard from the city workers as a whole, and that includes the hardworking men and women of the NYPD, is part of why the city is getting back on its feet and I'm appreciative of that work.”

@Ljiljana1972 A couple of weeks ago our household literally ran out of salt (a first!), and yet we kept chugging along for a few days. In contrast, there is no way we would tolerate life without our respective phones & laptops for more than a few hours (& that includes sleeping time).🙂

@ProfSteveFuller I wasn't aware that "Marxism" "failed". In fact, it seems to be the only theory that has stood the test of time and continues to be validate. And today, a Marxist is a having the time of their lives, indeed. 🎉

You know a project has failed when the 'true believers' are just making themselves and others miserable for an extended period of time, without getting any closer to their stated goals. This was how Marxism failed.

@Ljiljana1972 You must remember that the vast majority of people just don't read the classics - or even decent literature. PS: Princess Marya in W&P is a 4 dimensional character. A tour de force. And then there is Lizaveta Prokofyevna in The Idiot. What a full human character!

When someone asks, 'Who has meant the most to you in life?', you should come up with people with whom you have had to struggle to define yourself. Those struggles may be quiet and unacknowledged, but they're there.

@ProfSteveFuller PS: I heard someone from the supposedly far more nuanced French commentariat say within the span of one paragraph (they speak paragraphs): 'Russia has not been able to win decisively in Ukraine, but if we bring this war to a halt, Russia will swiftly invade the whole of Europe.'

These three claims taken together might point to a positive future: (1) Decline in human birth rate; (2) Increase in AI replacing human jobs; (3) The need for global ecological sustainability. Thus, the focus should be on improved energy efficiency of AI-powered computers.

@ProfSteveFuller Because Piers is probably not educated enough to know. Not sure, but probably. Reminds of Rachel Maddow being astonished to discover in 2018 that Agnew's resignation of VPship had nothing to do with Watergate.... These are not experts. They are performance artists.

@MarkSchmidtUBC Theory feels useless right up until it becomes the only thing that explains why a system behaves the way it does. Utility is a lagging indicator.

@scientistpops @mtaibbi Matt has not spoken against the Gaza genocide. No one should be taken seriously who has not taken a clear stand against the genocide. All the rest of it is just non-sense. Matt is no longer a serious person. He is at best kitsch. And who has time for kitsch.

@mtaibbi Matt is one of the very best journalists we have. One of the few who aren’t doing it for money and status.

I work for $6 monthly fees on Substack. I used to work in establishment media, with speaking fees, book deals, etc. Maybe you have it backwards?

@mtaibbi How does it feel to have sold the fuck out for that sweet establishment media cred, Matt? You fucking hack.

@denesetler @Ljiljana1972 2/2 Why? Because in Algeria (contra US and Europe) the sounds of babies and children is everywhere you go. A crying baby even sustained is just not an event.

@denesetler @Ljiljana1972 1/2 In my flights in US & Europe, a crying baby sets the hair of the adults into vertical mode. Flying from Europe to my home country of Algeria, there is invariably 2-3 hollering babies who are allowed to holler until they go to sleep. And NOT a single dirty look....

Our daughter was 6 m old when I travelled across Atlantic with her alone. I deeply regret now being so stressed out abt her crying & me not being able to calm her down. Mums should not be so stressed abt this so that they buy 200 goodie bags for fellow adults. 😐
Wholesome Side of 𝕏@itsme_urstruly

On a 10 hour flight from Seoul to San Francisco, a mother handed out more than 200 goodie bags filled with candy and ear plugs, in case her 4-month-old child would cry during the flight.

On the one hand you don’t want to start attributing all the country’s problems to a general double-dose of the stupid, but then this happens.

Day 46 of building a business with 0 experience. Cold emails only have a 20% chance of being opened. After doing some research and speaking with a successful fight promotion, I decided to tweak my email templates/tactic to follow this advice: •Email EVERY business in the area, starting with those with similar demographics  •Tell them about yourself first •Do NOT send them any $ amounts until they show interest •Do not be afraid to offer discounts to businesses to create a relationship built on trust Major change: I had originally included the prices of sponsorship packages, thinking that it would convey openness and honesty.  Moving forward, I will wait for interest before including $ amounts. Stay tuned to see results!

@ProfSteveFuller PS: But the insight that capitalism relies on projecting a sense of control and on its agents believing that they have it is an important and actionable one. We shall incorporate accordingly! 🙂🙏

Capitalism becomes truly dangerous when the capitalists start to doubt their own judgement, and then everyone dependent on them panics and the entire system goes into free fall.

@ProfSteveFuller I have a cohort of people in my life who are not familial (or even amical) or ‘useful’, but just interesting characters whose quirkiness is compelling enough to keep them in the interaction orbit…

It would be nice if there were a third reason for interacting with others, other than that you're stuck with them ('familial') or that they're useful ('transactional'). Too bad that 'attraction', especially if it doesn't follow prescribed patterns, is deemed problematic.
