Let's get started from scratch. 😎🚀🤘 In a way it was good to be off X for the last 4 months. But I accept, I did miss it.

The internet is where citizens hold power to account. But new IT Rules could make censorship easier, fact-checking weaker, and online creators more vulnerable to government oversight. This isn’t just about one blocked account. It’s about your right to speak, question, and know. We have a week to push back. For Resource note, see the second thread

Even by the standards of a country ranking 157 of 180 nations in the World Press Freedom Index, the reaction of the authorities to the ‘Cockroach Janata Party’ is beyond extraordinary. The public response to that imaginative prank should have signalled to them a deep discontent, even distress, among young people. Instead, as The Indian Express reported, it was framed as jeopardising the country’s ‘national security’ and ‘posing a threat to the sovereignty of India.’ Decades ago, the Malaysian lawyer and poet Cecil Rajendra wrote this brilliant poem that captures the idiocy of it better than any pompous editorialising could (not that our ‘mainstream’ media would dare do even that much).

'Decade of disasters', cockroaches, toffees, stray dogs, possible economic crash, Norwegian reporters, Italian melodies, fuel prices, green cards, Neet papers...looks like it's been a slow and positive news week. Good times.

Your newspapers won't tell you this 🚨 India is experiencing an extraordinary summer. With farmers unable to work outside, livestock under heat stress and crops failing, the United Nations is concerned that the heat waves are pushing food supply “to the brink”.

Action should have been taken against the Education Minister for the paper leak. For the student who lost his life due to the government’s failure. But in New India, action is being taken against the Cockroach Janta Party for demanding accountability. #Cockroachjantaparty

Did you know human-elephant conflicts in Assam peak during the monsoon season when elephants enter agricultural areas?. Habitat fragmentation is driving these majestic animals into tea gardens and villages. Protecting forest patches is the key to harmony. 🌧️🐘🌳 #AssamForests #Ecology #WildlifeProtection @moefcc @EnvironmentPib @wii_india @GobindsagarBha1 @rameshpandeyifs @SPYadavIFS @vrtiwari1 @bhlab_india @paragnigam09 @dmittal_ifs @AnukulNath4 @thePeerJ

The contempt case against @SauravDassss raises serious concerns about press freedom, especially given his record of reporting on judicial accountability, hard-hitting stories that go where many in the press don’t, writes @betwasharma To read, subscribe article-14.com/subscribe

Whether the cockroach janta party is a legitimate movement or not, is not the question. Time will tell. But the traction they received, the sentiment behind it, the rhetoric from the youth, all legitimate. And if all that wasn’t legit enough, the utterly dumb move of shutting down their accounts legitimised everything.

Supreme Court just declined a plea against the Adani project in Singrauli because of a "delay" in filing. So now, 6-7 LAKH TREES 🌴 will be chopped down just because of a technical time-limit rule?! Are we seriously putting bureaucratic deadlines over the life of our planet? No one seems to understand what happens when nature becomes just as reluctant to support us.Our future generations will pay the ultimate price for these bloody, human-made rules. Devastating. #SaveSingrauli #EnvironmentFirst #ClimateCrisis #adani @PMOIndia @CMMadhyaPradesh @moefcc @byadavbjp

*STATEMENT* As per reports, the Hon’ble Delhi High Court today has issued notice to me in a plea seeking initiation of criminal contempt proceedings over one of my reports concerning the appearance of conflict of interest and reasonable apprehension of bias in Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma hearing the CBI appeal in the Delhi Excise Policy case. The petitioner alleges that my report contains “serious, unfounded and scandalous allegations” against Justice Sharma. I stand firmly by my reporting. The report was based entirely on documentary material: RTI data furnished by the Ministry of Law & Justice, the judge’s own judicial orders in Criminal Revision Petitions, publicly available records, and statements made by a sitting Hon’ble Judge of the Supreme Court himself. Not a single fact reported by me has been rebutted either by the judge concerned or by the CBI in any of the proceedings, including the suo-motu contempt proceedings. In that backdrop, an unattached third party has now come into the picture. That said, since the matter now directly concerns me and is sub-judice, it will not be appropriate to comment further on the merits at this stage. I shall place my response before the Court after consulting distinguished members of the Bar, eminent legal luminaries, and respected members of the fraternity. The constitutional guarantee of free speech includes the right, not just of journalists, but of every citizen, to fairly scrutinise and critique judicial functioning and administrative decisions that have a bearing on public confidence in the institution. The faith in the institution can never be strengthened through opacity or the chilling of public scrutiny. Journalism that seeks to uncover these uncomfortable facts in the largest of public interests is part of the constitutional duty of the fourth pillar. Questions cannot be contempt.✊🏻 #JournalismIsNotACrime
