Village communities in Tamil Nadu have successfully restored 38 traditional tanks and ponds that had dried up or silted over the years. Through Project Nanneer by the Murugappa Group, they desilted, deepened, and strengthened these water bodies, increasing their total storage capacity from 255 million litres to 370 million litres. This has helped raise groundwater levels, providing reliable water for drinking, irrigation, and livestock even in dry months. Farmers no longer need to dig very deep for water, and fallow lands are being cultivated again. The restored tanks also support more birdlife, native trees, and reduce flooding risks. Overall, these low-cost, community-led efforts are reviving a traditional water management system and improving lives in a sustainable way.
