hey all, I am mainly tweeting science related stuff if at all, so it‘s quiet here. Follow me at @dechmannlab though for bats and shrews and everything we do (painting of a tagged noctule by the amazing @AlonaPrylutska for attention, follow her! )

@kaiatombak the fact that bats have larger females fits the big mother hypothesis. If you make only very few young but have to raise them quickly and entirely on your milk you make them big. Bat babies are huge compared to their moms!

Body mass isn't the best measure of body size b/c it can vary (a LOT) by body condition. So we also ran estimates on the subset of our data (N=172 spp) for which body length was also reported: 30% of mammals had larger males, 48% were monomorphic, & 22% had larger females. (8/13)

Darwin's word is generally heralded as the authoritative opinion on matters of evolution. One of the things he said that we've been nodding along with for centuries is that males are larger than females in most mammals. (1/13)

Animal Trackers need a wireless network to get data back from tagged animals but cellphones and satellites are 🤑 and heavy. Here we demonstrate the @SigFox #IoT network as a new option not only to retrieve GPS data but also geolocate even smaller tags animalbiotelemetry.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.11…
