@Psythor They are still stuck in the Star-Wars trap of trying to create new episodes that re-capture how great we all remember/imagine it used to be when we were watching through younger and less critical eyes.

I last gave up on Doctor Who some time in the self-indulgent Matt Smith era, though I watched a couple of Whittaker episodes (the Rosa Parks one was good!). The new one tonight reminded of everything about the show I find annoying though, alas.

@sillypunk Because lossy algorithms/systems are more efficient! (Seriously, it's because different airports optimise for different sorts of efficiency)

@glenpyle @aetiology Conversely, when deciding whether you are qualified it's important to compare yourself to the likely alternative interviewees, not to some abstract perfect expert.

I recently turned down an interview request because I felt my expertise was insufficient for the topic. Just saw a post that the interview was done by a colleague with even less expertise.🤦‍♂️ For scientists who don't know: it's okay to decline media when you are not qualified.

@tom_hartley How do you get such low scores consistently? It takes me a couple of guesses just to pin down the broad category of topic.

@SciencePunk You could write almost exactly the same article decrying scepticism as a label or concept just because many people holding strange ideas self identify as skeptics.

@SciencePunk One of those articles that makes me scream at the dishonest conflation of concepts and the constant attacks on quite reasonable positions by discussing the most extreme people who claim to hold those positions.

@timelfen The fact that peer review can be valuable, meaningful work isn't at odds with the idea that it is work. Work needs to be compensated to be sustainable.

I don’t begrudge those who see peer review as merely a professional obligation, or as labor exchanged for a salary, but it was as close a taste of what I imagined the life of intellectual community could be as I would ever get.

I never finished my PhD but I’ve been asked a couple of times to do peer reviews since leaving my program. I accepted each, gave in-depth reviews, & am very happy I got the chance to engage in intellectual exchange w/ another scholar. That is what I was always after.

@thesiswhisperer If we all recognised all contributions to our work, we could get rid of the currency of authorship altogether. I'm not saying my pet lizard does more work than my RA, but stuff wouldn't get written without him.

@dmofengineering Everyone searches the room for three hours, then they ask me to help find the treasure. I point out the obvious lever none of them have tried pulling.

It's easy for academics to be cynical when management tells us to self-care, because guilt and responsibility drive us constantly towards overwork. But the message to prioritise based on our values has been consistent in both talk and policy for the last couple of years.

Days like today I'm particularly proud to work at @Griffith_Uni. VC to all staff "This week may be a difficult one, and I encourage you to prioritise your wellbeing and that of your families and neighbours ... we will trust you to do what work you can, where and when you can"
