@kleistmeister @202accepted then they would be subject to NY taxes, which is probably far higher than the actual state they live in. if that's the case, it would honestly cause them to ironically pay more taxes just to claim to live in NY, than to pay this tax if they lived in, say FL 🤷🏿‍♂️

All you have to do to avoid the tax is lie and claim your primary residence is in NYC. Easy enough. The current bill proposition also has trouble with Trusts, as it costs to investigate each one, and it has to be done on a yearly basis. All you have to do is yourself, or have your parent or child claim the residence as a primary residence, tax averted. The bill hasn't been properly drafted yet, so it could possibly not even be implemented. They are overdue on their budget by half a month, so they are scrambling to grab money wherever they can because they are wildly (and on track to be even more wildly, as this tax won't even cover the shortfall) overspent. Mamdani can't afford half the things he has promised with a NY budget, even if the rich were taxed even more.

i hate to say it but a 1% tax on property over $5m you don’t live in is hard to argue against for the average voter like, the solution is simply “actually live in NYC”, “what are you so broke you can’t afford 1%?”, and “well you could just leave NYC” all are ego hits none of these property owners don’t wanna take and have a hard time refuting love or hate him, he’s actually doing something vs most mayors and tells you in the slickest way possible
Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani@NYCMayor

Happy Tax Day, New York. We’re taxing the rich.
