Marion County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a woman, later identified as Brandy McGowan, threatening customers with a knife at a Walmart on South Highway 441. ​ Deputy Witte arrived to find McGowan in the clothing section holding a knife she had reportedly taken from the store's shelves. The deputy spent several minutes giving McGowan clear verbal commands to drop the weapon. Once backup arrived, Deputy Witte transitioned to non-lethal force, using a taser to incapacitate McGowan. She was then safely disarmed and taken into custody. McGowan was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. During the encounter, she appeared to be in the midst of a mental health crisis or under the influence of a substance, as she made several nonsensical statements to the officers.
