I was always stunned by the lunacy of the Abraham Accords from an Emirati perspective. The UAE's conflict with Iran is far more resolvable than Israel's conflict with Iran. By joining the Abraham Accords and explicitly becoming a member of Israel's anti-Iran bloc, the UAE essentially attached itself to Israel's conflict with Iran - even though Israel is 1000 miles from Iran, while the UAE is only 50 miles from Iran's shores. The UAE made itself a frontline state in Israel's fight with Iran. Abu Dhabi is now paying the price for this mistake. Geography is ensuring that the key decisions are made elsewhere - while it pays the highest price.

The Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) requires obedience only to lawful orders. Orders from the President (as Commander-in-Chief) or any superior are presumed lawful, but this presumption ends when the order is manifestly/patently unlawful. Meaning a reasonable person of ordinary sense and understanding would recognize it as illegal. Here's what he should do: 1) Privately advise the President and @SecWar that the strikes would violate the laws of war (distinction, proportionality, military necessity) and expose U.S. personnel to war-crimes liability. 2) Demand and enforce formal legal reviews through US Army Judge Advocate General's Corps and targeting processes; refuse to certify or advance any unlawful strike plans. 3) Refuse to plan, brief, or transmit the order to subordinate commanders. 4) Resign or request retirement in protest if the order is insisted upon. 5) Document all objections in writing (memos, emails, notes) to create a legal record. 6) Remind subordinate commanders of their independent duty under UCMJ Article 92 and the DoD Law of War Manual to disobey manifestly unlawful orders.
