In 1988, the SSPX was seen as a small, fringe, radical group -- something like a criminal organization headed by a madman (in the mainstream). However, it survived, and has continued to outpace the rest of the Church in vocations (relative to its size, of course), and its positions on V2, the TLM, etc., have become largely mainstream Traditional theological talking points. There were no major, internationally known bishops like +Schneider going on mainstream, international stations like EWTN promoting and defending the Society to Raymond Arroyo. You had to order books from obscure, small publishers (mostly in French) to learn about them, and if you brought up the SSPX in mixed company, people would look at you like you uttered a racial slur. Some today are clutching their pearls because Don Pagliarani has said the odd thing that isn't "charitable" enough for their pacified sensibilities that have developed after decades of the Church of Nice. Well, my friends, I would caution reading things that Our Lord said, or that the Church Fathers wrote, if Don P offends you. On 1 July, the SSPX will have a number of new bishops, and the millions of faithful around the world who depend on them will rejoice. They will rejoice because they so often asked their spiritual fathers for bread but were handed stones, so they fell into the loving arms of missionaries in the SSPX who go to the ends of the Earth to bring them what they need to save their souls. The Society will continue to grow after 1 July, and the autodemolition of the Church (Paul VI's words) will continue to accelerate. A few short decades (short in terms of history, long in lived experience), and the conciliar experiment will have utterly and completely failed, no matter how many times they try to 'Synodality' harder. In that rubble, the Traditional priests of the Church who continued to fight the good fight will be there to help us all pick up the pieces, and Archbishop Lefebvre will be recognized as the Saint that so many of us already know him to be. But, by all means, continue with your Hegelian dialectic of warring theological talking points about myriad hermeneutics and disputable points of ecclesiology and interpretations of ambiguous points of Vatican II. It will be time wasted, but waste your time if you wish. I think so many have forgotten what Scripture tells us so plainly, "The life of man upon earth is a warfare" (Job 7:1). We are at war. In war, there are casualties, and there are decisions to be made at real moments when you don't have the luxury of endlessly pontificating.
