There are no documented monkey-human transmission of rabies EVER recorded in the US. Even outside US monkey-human transmission is extremely rare because monkeys are not primary animal reservoirs of the disease. There is an astronomical small chance a vaccine is beneficial for anything more than peace of mind, and a moderate chance it causes actual harm. But hey why do risk benefit analysis when you can post a meme, and “feel” safer.

@nabila_nich This is maybe a pretty bad idea, the hand rails are designed to move a slightly faster than the stairs. This is good for normal facing riders, but will cause her to loose stability as she descends, and her grip moves towards her center of mass/wheel pivot.

If the bite is close enough to the brain, you’re fucked anyway. If you want to reduce possible human harm to the greatest extent possible, you determine if the monkey had rabies as quickly as possible. If it does, vaccines STAT, if it doesn’t move on.. We don’t have enough information to make better decisions. We don’t know the prevalence of rabies in the area or if the monkey wild or captive. There is a ~30% chance of mild side effects, and ~10% moderate-severe sides effects from vaccine. Based on US Rabies infection rates, my guess is there is a 1 in 500,000,000 chance it saves a life in this case. 83% of all US rabies cases involve bats, Extensive CDC surveillance, state health department reviews, and literature (including a comprehensive 2014 global analysis of nonhuman primate rabies cases) confirm zero documented monkey-to-human rabies transmissions domestically.

@nb_angura @AshleyMS43 @heyyitsjanea I don’t know I’d disagree if me personally, but based on evidence available, there’s a far greater chance the vaccine causes harm unnecessarily, than there is for it to prevent death. Very low chance vaccine is needed here, moderate chance vaccine causes moderate injury.

My state has had two people die of rabies in ~70 years. The most recent case: man bit by a bat, on the neck and declined treatment. Bats are a known rabies vector. Monkeys aren’t native to my state, but would almost certainly be “indoor” if they did, and in general, indoor animals are at extremely low risk of contracting an already rare disease. So again, if the monkey is not already showing symptoms of rabies, it’s extremely unlikely to actually be spreading rabies just because it bit someone. Monkeys WILL bite people, that’s not abnormal behavior. Bats will not land on a persons neck (in my area) unless they have rabies. I still see no indication a rabies shot is indeed “needed” based on the evidence I currently have. In other locations this math would change, but if I’m in Hawaii, I’d say it’s medical malpractice to administer the rabies vaccine in this case, because there is no rabies in Hawaii. Rabies vaccine do not have zero risk.

I’d rather not wait to see if Monkey is rabid myself, but rabies is rare in most of US at least, with indoor animals having extremely low risk. The rabies shot isn’t common in humans because of side effects.

They don’t have “no” maintenance, they have “less” maintenance. Gas stations aren’t “special” they are “ubiquitous”.

Except it’s false. EV’s are roughly the same weight as combustion vehicles and are less than the average price of a new vehicle and have none of the maintenance costs and don’t need to go to a special place to fuel. No chance combustion will survive. Also EV’s can be powered with sunlight.

To be clear the wildlife bridge is a good idea. It's a no-brainer money saver. Either pay for the bridge or externalize the cost onto a bunch of different people's cars and lives over time. That's not to mention the loss of the animals lives. Don't let rampant corruption and weaponized incompetentence trick you into thinking good ideas are bad.
