@keysmashbandit Humans have an incredible ability to get used to things. We have our modern creature comforts but if you never had them you don’t even realize how much discomfort you have in life. Having gone 7 days hiking without showering or comfort, by the 4th day or so I’m used to it

The thing I feel most cognitively dissonant about when thinking about history is how much time everyone spent being physically uncomfortable. Heavy itchy wool, greasy hair, too cold or hot. If I try to imagine myself doing daily life circa 1704 I get immediately blocked by that

@frogs4girls Only way to do it is have designated windows you read up on the news and then you unplug for like 12-24 hours. If I do that I don’t feel so overwhelming, though at this point I’m comfortably numb to the god awful shit

@SlopHq Is it really *that* expensive??? I mean I guess it’s a shitload of concrete, earthworks, laborers, specialized machinery, eminent domain’ing the land (not free), building overpasses, etc

a freeway costs $50-200 million per mile to build and we don't ask it to turn a profit. a train line proposes the same price tag and suddenly it needs to be self-funding by 2031. the infrastructure we subsidize reveals what we value and we have chosen the car every single time

“According to aviation insider JonNYC, he then continued working alone for over an hour after the crash, guiding remaining planes back to their gates because there was no one to relieve him until morning.”
Sam Antha@SamanthaLives1

Minutes after the Air Canada CRJ-900 collided with a fire truck on Runway 4 at LaGuardia Airport last night, killing both pilots, the air traffic controller's voice was captured on LiveATC audio. "That wasn't good to watch," a voice is heard saying on the frequency. The controller replies: "Yeah, I know. I was here. I tried to reach out. We were dealing with an emergency earlier. I messed up." The other voice responds: "Nah man, you did the best you could," according to Newsweek and CBC News. The controller had been working alone, handling both ground and tower operations. A United Airlines flight had aborted takeoff due to a warning light and a cabin odor that sickened the flight attendants. The controller cleared a fire truck to cross Runway 4 to reach the United plane. Seconds later, he realized Air Canada Flight 8646 was still rolling down the same runway after landing, according to CNN. "Stop, stop, stop, Truck 1, stop!" he shouted. It was too late. After the collision, the controller ordered an approaching Delta flight to go around, closed the runway, and called in additional emergency vehicles. According to aviation insider JonNYC, he then continued working alone for over an hour after the crash, guiding remaining planes back to their gates because there was no one to relieve him until morning.

@FoilingMothra @Faytuks There is no world where Israel attacks fucking Mecca, my guy. Israel and Saudi were in the process of normalizing relations prior to 10/7. Iran is not going to attack a holy site for their own religion. It’s on the other side of KSA, far from any targeted locations.

@Ditty_77 @Faytuks US used to do doctrine. MBS is the guardian of the two holy sites. What if Al Kaaba is destroyed by accident or intent? Many things can happen in the Fog of War.

@rexjonesnewz It's in port for maintenance after the fire. I've not seen any source say that it will be 12-14 months, but Naval repairs are indeed painstakingly long sometimes

@Osinttechnical Which is fair considering 1. Trump attacked during negotiations last time and before. 2. Many officials from the Iranian regime are dead. Who can even negotiate on behalf of the entire nation? 3. US simply cannot control Israel. What guarantees are there Israel will comply??

@vcdgf555 More than likely all the fire truck would have heard in the cabin was the turbo diesel -- those things are ridiculously loud when accelerating. CBC up here is saying the flight attendant was found outside the aircraft strapped in the jumpseat which makes sense based off damage.

@StatisticUrban In addition to what the others said, I think JD and Rubio want as little association with this war as possible. Bessent, Hegseth, and Trump can take the brunt of it, preserving future presidential aspirations for JD or Rubio.

Q: Whose idea was that to put ICE in the airports? Trump: Mine. That was mine. That was like the paper clip. Do you know the story of the paper clip? 182 years ago, a man discovered the paper clip. It was so simple. ICE was my idea

@BNODesk C-130's are 4 engined prop planes. It sounds like all engines sputtered out when it was going past the treeline. Perhaps fuel contamination? 4 engines do not all go out at once otherwise
