🇺🇸 Neuralink unveiled a next-generation surgical robot that can reach almost any region of the brain to implant its BCI electrodes, threads so thin a human surgeon can't physically do it by hand. The robot operates across 5 axes, has 8 cameras, and can see through the brain's surface. It's already completed a successful surgery. Neuralink currently has 21 trial participants, some of whom are controlling computers and robotic limbs with their minds at speeds that rival a traditional mouse. Why would China be "cancer"? Because, in Kallas' own description, their companies are more competitive and this forces what she describes as a binary choice for the EU: "morphine" - subsidize EU companies - or "chemo", become more hostile to Chinese companies. Or maybe, just maybe, it's not binary, and if there's any cancer eating away at Europe's future, it's precisely Kallas' mindset - the reflex to call "disease" what is simply someone else doing a better job.

Burkina Faso’s government under President Ibrahim Traoré has shut down all laboratories involved in a controversial genetically modified mosquito project, ordering the destruction of remaining samples and halting over a decade of research. The project, known as Target Malaria, involved releasing gene-edited mosquitoes into the wild to combat malaria. It had been operating in the country since 2012 and had just received regulatory approval from Burkina Faso’s biosafety authorities weeks earlier. However, the government acted after strong public opposition, stating that the people of Burkina Faso had not consented to their country being used as a testing ground for Western biotechnology experiments. The modified mosquitoes were being developed in laboratories in the United States, Italy, and the United Kingdom.

An 18-year-old just did what billion-dollar water companies couldn't. Meet Mia Heller. A high school junior from Warrenton, Virginia who built a water filter in her garage that strips out 95.5% of microplastics from drinking water. That's better than most government treatment plants, which sit somewhere between 70% and 90%. Her secret weapon? Ferrofluid. A magnetized liquid made of oil and powder that latches onto microplastic particles. Then a magnet yanks them out. No membranes. No constant filter replacements. No endless maintenance bills. The ferrofluid even gets recycled, around 87% of it, in a closed loop. The spark for all of this wasn't a classroom project. It was a local newspaper article warning that her town's tap water was loaded with PFAS and microplastics, and that nobody was coming to fix it. So she watched her mom swap out filter after filter and thought, there has to be a smarter way. She built the prototype herself. Tested it with a homemade turbidity sensor. Then walked into the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair and walked out with a special award from the Patent and Trademark Office Society.
