Today was my uncle’s funeral, the last of my father’s siblings. He was a good man. Defended Jeffrey Dahmer in court. You might ask “what about defending Jeffrey Dahmer made him good?” Indeed my mother asked him something similar just after the trial: “how could a good Catholic like you defend a monster?” Will never forget what he said: “all Americans, no matter how heinous their crime, deserve a fair trial and a proper defense against the state.” Wise words from a good man.

Most of my successful friends in their 30s are still struggling with modern dating. One of my best friends recently got into a serious relationship and told me his biggest dating unlock came from listening to a podcast with the Director of Relationship Science at Hinge. For most of his life, he's been dating based on what looks good on paper. It makes sense - successful people are naturally drawn to other seemingly successful people. But he made a mental shift a few months ago based on advice from the podcast: date someone based on how they make you feel. The person he's dating now is completely opposite of him in most ways but he feels calm and secure around her and that convinced him to take the leap. As simple as it sounds, this is a really hard thing for successful people to do. Dating based on how someone makes you feel seems arbitrary, random, and unsustainable. Naysayers might say this advice is generic and Freudian at best. Maybe he's subconsciously looking for the unconditional love he received from his mother that gives him security. But I think more people should follow this advice and see where it takes you especially if your current dating criteria just doesn't seem to work.

Hi fellow X people. Happy personal update: after 2+ years at Medium, I’ve decided to start my next chapter. Collaborating with a talented, mission-driven team on a platform used by over 100M people per month has been an honor, and I’m grateful to @ev for bringing in my last start-up and trusting @abenzer and me with so much responsibility. I learned a lot, and am proud of the impact our team had on Medium’s turnaround, including making 75M articles listenable, growing revenue by 40%, and driving millions of dollars in operating efficiencies. As for what's next: I’ve loved scouting for A16Z, and am doubling down as an early-stage investor. More details to come after some travel time with my fam, but as a 3x founder I feel especially energized sharing my learnings — both from the successes and the stumbles — and supporting a new generation of dreamers and builders. Our auxiliary officers do amazing work every day. Earlier this week, our @NYPDTransit TD 20 APOs assisted on two separate arrests while on patrol at the 74th Street Roosevelt train station. Our auxiliaries continue to be our eyes and ears all throughout the city.
