@mattpocockuk Does that include skills with reference docs? I find coding style / linting skills hard to keep short, but they are easy to divide into multiple short reference docs.

Long skills are such a red flag to me - Hard to audit (and therefore, trust) - Hard to edit (more text, harder to maintain) - Expensive to run (more text, more tokens) The shorter the skill, the better IMO

@mattpocockuk @trq212 Is HTML preferable for both input and output? I know output becomes input downstream, but is it preferable for say a skill or context file in my repo?

@mattpocockuk What do you think about context files versus code docs? This seems great and I'm eager to try it, but I'm assuming your code base will model pitches, videos and stand-alone videos. With code docs and an LSP, the AI could look up the missing context on demand.

/grill-me is my most popular skill ever. I get 5-10 messages a day about how it’s changed people’s workflows for the better But… I’ve stopped using it for code. Here’s the improved version:

@matej_cerny It's not a positive thing, but I'm not convinced that the decline in juniors is a Scala thing. The same trend can be seen in the Stack Overflow developer survey. Could be the downward trend since the 2022 peak. Could be dead internet theory due to agentic coding.

This is scary! 🫣 Only 6% of respondents to the Scala 2026 survey have less than two years of experience with the language! I know it's a difficult time for junior developers right now, but this stat is seriously giving me COBOL vibes 🥶

@3lfares Denying the genocide convention is no different than denying the Holocaust. That convention was world's combined effort to prevent the next Holocaust.

Say whatever you want about the official definition of genocide (which is endorsed by Holocaust survivors and by virtually all genocide scholars), but it is factually correct to say that it doesn't require killings but is rather focused on intent (whereas killings and other ways to inflict harm and destruction of an ethnic or national group are most common) un.org/en/genocide-pr…

@matej_cerny Selecting rows seems like a wonderful use-case for named tuples. The options of creating a case class and unnamed tuples are both annoying.

I've played a bit with Wick, the new type-safe Spark API from Netflix. I've only tried the basics, but if you're a beginner interested in how it works, check out my latest article 👇 #scala #spark matejcerny.cz/en/apache-spar…

I genuinely disagree with most of the article. Yes, in the default setup, LLMs write poor Scala. But it takes less than an hour to configure them properly - installing Metals MCP, Cellar and a few skills. After that, the generated code is actually really good!

@kubukoz @baldram @softwaremill FlatMap is even a good indicator of code smell. It adds a small friction in the right places. With direct-style it's arbitrary like too many LoC in a method. With flatMap you know it's time to refactor when you start to perform gymnastics to nest the third for-comp.

Just tried Ox for Scala by @softwaremill. Direct-style code as readable as Python, but unlike Python, your method signature is the contract: type-safe, explicit, no surprises. No more deciphering flatMap chains. Turns out FP doesn't have to be complicated: Scala just needed direct-style. When the contract lives in the signature — not in a comment like in Python — AI coding agents get it right — not eventually, but by design.
