🇺🇸 Hikaru Nakamura after his loss to 🇺🇿 Javokhir Sindarov: “I can’t be mad at myself for this one.” Nakamura said the mistake came down to preparation: “This is 100% on the people who are working for me… my file didn’t have the move castles.” He added that castling was “such a human move” that when Sindarov played it, his reaction was: “What is this?” According to Hikaru, it felt almost impossible to work it out over the board without already knowing the idea.

@davidllada @GMJuditPolgar Tuis is the best summary I’ve read about the documentary. I thought the same about Kasparov. Also, I did not know about Fischer spending time with the Polgar family, and the timing of it seems so pivotal to the whole story!

I’d give the Judit Polgár documentary a solid 8/10, even though, as a hardcore fan, it’s hard not to call it a ten. I am very fond of @GMJuditPolgar, and I’m genuinely happy that she received such a beautiful tribute, one that lives up to what her career and story deserve. Sometimes, the richer the character and the story, the harder it is to condense everything into a biopic that feels coherent, enjoyable to watch, and neatly wrapped up. In that sense, the director, Rory Kennedy, did a very good job. To keep the narrative moving and build toward a climactic moment, the filmmakers chose to frame @Kasparov63 as Judit’s antagonist. That choice is understandable, but there is perhaps a bit too much of him, and of their rivalry, in the story. Toning it down slightly would not have hurt the overall effect. They really dug deep into the archives. The casual exchange between Kasparov and @SusanPolgar at the opening ceremony of the Thessaloniki Olympiad was a treat, as were many photographs I had never seen before. The clips from Linares, in particular, filled me with nostalgia. Kudos as well to Dirk Jan ten Geuzendam, @Anna_Chess Rudolf, and @MauriceAshley. Three excellent choices. Each of them is outstanding in their own right, but together I found they complemented each other very nicely, with their different tone of voice and approach. I also have nothing but praise for the music department. Meghan Currier and Randall Poster as music supervisors, along with Antonio Medellín-Fajardo as orchestrator, put together a rousing girl-power soundtrack with a hint of punk that really adds dynamism to the documentary. All that said, there are a few omissions that made the story feel somewhat incomplete. For instance, the fact that Judit was World Champion in the U14 category — in the “boys” section — probably deserved at least a mention. It also feels odd that there is no reference at all to the time Bobby Fischer spent with the Polgár family summer of 1993, by which point Judit had already “dethroned” him as the greatest chess prodigy ever. Given that Bobby is quoted quite a few times along the documentary, I found this strange. Another fascinating side story is how the three sisters developed their careers in parallel. While Judit consistently avoided women’s competitions, Susan held a different view and was happy to compete for and win women’s titles. Both have articulated strong and valid arguments for their positions. To me, this always felt like a subconscious but very pragmatic choice, one that helped prevent rivalry, jealousy, or tension from building up between them. It was a topic that probably deserved some more screen time: If I said before that Kasparov received too much of it, maybe Susan received a bit too little. All in all, I just wish this documentary had been a three-episode miniseries. I could easily have watched three more hours of it, and if you read all the way here, that probably means you would have too 🙂

I know praising Lichess is as popular as ever. On chess Reddit, someone shows up every second Saturday to say Lichess is the best thing that ever happened to chess. I’ve actually contributed to Lichess myself as a streamer and blogger. I stopped because of their political stance – that’s a different story. I’m not pretending Lichess hasn’t done a lot of good. In fact, my own project, ChessEver, wouldn’t have progressed so fast without Lichess existing. Still, if you put the benefits aside for a moment, there’s something fundamentally wrong with the Lichess model: it destroys the chess market. Providing so many features for free makes it very hard for any chess business to charge for its services. If businesses can’t charge, they can’t pay professionals properly. If professionals can’t earn enough, they’re pushed to play in badly conditioned events. Conditions don’t improve for professionals, and that eventually hurts casual fans, too. That’s the vicious cycle. Nothing is truly free. Someone always pays — with money, time, or the opportunities that never get built because it stopped making economic sense to try.

If 50 year mortgages are introduced, you’d be wise to buy property with one. They will cause such inflation on property values that you’ll need to buy property as a hedge. The real play is not to worry about the payments or the loan or the insane amounts of interest. It is to assume that the government will recklessly inflate the value of houses and the debt will melt into irrelevance over time. It’s not a risky bet, you’re simply trusting the government to do the exact wrong things.

EXCLUSIVE ALLEGED DISCRIMINATORY HIRING PRACTICES AT COCA-COLA AGAINST WHITE PEOPLE An individual named "David" sent in a job application to @CocaCola, citing 20 YEARS of experience in the industry. His application was REJECTED the next day. He then sent in another application, just changing his name to "DeShawn,” and reduced his work experience to only 5 years. His application under "DeShawn" was ACCEPTED, and he was given an opportunity to do an interview. We reached out to Coca-Cola who responded with “the accusation is untrue as the fake applicants’ qualifications were otherwise not identical.” This only makes it worse and confirms what we know. The fake applicant with the black name had LESS experience than the real applicant yet was offered an interview. This must be investigated. How many other white people were discriminated against by Coca Cola?? @HarmeetKDhillon @AAGDhillon
