Truly so grateful - and truly so humbled. My deep, sincere thanks to our @WHO_Europe Member States - including my home country Belgium 🇧🇪 - for your trust in me to lead our Regional Office for a second term, through your vote at our 74th Regional Committee for Europe. My first term began just as #COVID-19 was declared a global health emergency. My second term comes at a time of deepening permacrisis, region-wide and globally. Yet, I remain an incurable optimist. We can - and will - avail of the many opportunities at hand to collaborate with and support our 53 Member States across Europe and Central Asia to elevate health even higher on political and social development agendas. During my visit to #Rwanda 🇷🇼 I was struck by the bravery & resilience of health workers, many of whom are survivors of the #Marburg outbreak. Robust action by the government from the highest level, while working closely with @WHO & partners, is effectively driving the response.
