Another interesting fact - Kudzu isn’t native to the U.S. at all. It’s from East Asia (Japan, China, Korea). Americans first saw it at the 1876 Philadelphia World’s Fair as a pretty ornamental vine. Then in the 1930s–50s the government actually paid farmers to plant it everywhere to stop soil erosion.
Without its natural predators it exploded, growing up to a foot a day, and became “the vine that ate the South.” Now it covers millions of acres across 30+ states.
