A neurotypical person stays up late because they want more leisure time. The ADHD brain stays up because it spent every drop of dopamine it had on executive function during the day. Sitting in meetings, managing transitions, filtering impulses, remembering the thing you were supposed to remember. That burns through dopamine the way sprinting burns through glycogen. By 10pm the tank is empty. But here's where it gets counterintuitive. The exhaustion is physical. The dopamine deficit is neurological. Those are two separate systems. Your muscles want sleep. Your prefrontal cortex is starving for the stimulation it was denied all day because it spent 14 hours on task-switching and impulse control instead of anything that actually felt rewarding. The phone at midnight is the brain trying to collect what it's owed. Low-effort, high-stimulation content. Scrolling, short videos, rabbit holes. The exact profile of activity that delivers dopamine without requiring the executive function you already depleted. The sleep researchers call this a "self-regulation failure." It's closer to a debt collection. You borrowed against your own reward system to function all day. The bill comes due at midnight. And the brain will not let you sleep until it gets paid.

It’s actually not the SIM card at all. Even if the iPad had no cellular plan, no SIM, or was completely Wi-Fi only, Apple’s Find My network can still track it after shutdown if “Find My” and “Find My Network” were enabled beforehand. It uses low-power Bluetooth signals relayed anonymously by nearby Apple devices, basically AirTag-style tracking built into the iPad itself. Again, though the guy was able to ping the device and got an audible reply, which proves the device was not turned off to begin with. That’s how they found it once they got on the aircraft.

Police were called to a Dallas airport after a passenger reported her iPad stolen. Using Apple’s Find My app, they tracked it in real-time—straight onto a plane ready for takeoff. Officers boarded, and when the owner triggered the sound alert, the iPad started beeping loudly from a passenger’s bag. The suspect (who claimed he “found it” or didn’t understand) was caught red-handed before the flight could leave. The plane was briefly delayed, and the thief missed his trip.
