Biggest surprise by far of the draft -- no ILB. Steelers showed considerable interest in the class up and down and it was a deep group. Run on them in late 4th and 5th probably did it in.

...we do not have a scouting report on Rubio and he wasn't on my pre-draft radar. Has size Steelers look for in a d-lineman at 6051, 321 pounds. Missed last half of 2025 with an arm injury.

Don’t know anything about DT Rubio - Steelers 6th rounder. Here’s his draft bio. Seems like a real project: Gabriel Rubio from Lutheran Of St Charles County High School was rated a 4-star recruit by ESPN and handed a 4-star grade by 247 Sports. After high school, Rubio joined Notre Dame after being heavily recruited. In 2022 as a freshman Rubio saw action in 11 games and played a total of 159 snaps for the Fighting Irish. He recorded only 8 tackles, 8 assists, while adding 5 stops. As a pass rusher, he added 7 total pressures, which included 4 QB hurries, 3 QB hits, and no sacks on the season. As a sophomore for the Fighting Irish in 2023 Rubio played in 8 games and took part in 122 snaps for the Fighting Irish. He recorded only 6 tackles, 4 assists, while adding 6 stops. As a pass rusher, he chalked up 7 total pressures, and 6 QB hurries, one QB hit, and no sacks during the year.  SCOUTING REPORT: STRENGTHS •Rubio has heavy hands and uses them aggressively, rocking offensive linemen back. He shows the ability to disengage and out-grapple blockers in a phone booth. •Can make the impressive chest-to-chest bear hug tackle in the hole due to his ability to wreak havoc in the backfield. •Strong tackler. Has good power in hands and can anchor, shed, and chase. •Plays with leverage at the point of attack whether inside or outside. Keeps eyes in the backfield when inside; moves linemen to either side with strong hands. •He has violent hands and the long arms to ward off blockers. Rubio plays with a good pad level and can win with power as a bull rusher. •Flashes an explosive burst and can surprise better overall athletes with his ability to get upfield. Has a closing burst when given a free lane. Has the frame to consider moving inside  SCOUTING REPORT: WEAKNESSES •His spin move is a bit slow and mechanical. He’s susceptible to cut blocks, a tactic that was used on him often •Undersized and lacks elite bulk and girth for an interior defensive lineman - will be scheme specific in the NFL. •His pass rush moves need refinement, and Rubio doesn’t have a lot of range in coverage.

Don't look at Wetjen as just the round. This is the 6th player Pittsburgh's selected. When you have all those Day 2 picks, you can take a more niche (but still important) position like returner.

During today's presser, Omar Khan asked about #Steelers 1st round pick always being a "Top 30" visitor. That is...not true. At all. Artie Burns, T.J. Watt, Rashard Mendenhall, Devin Bush, Bud Dupree, etc. all did not come in for a visit. Pittsburgh went to their Pro Days.
