What a load of codswallop from Peter Hitchens. The 1970s, to which he so fondly refers, was the time when trades unions destroyed vast swathes of the British manufacturing base with unrealistic wage and conditions demands that broke the back of all but the service industries. newspaper.mailplus.co.uk/data/8137/read…

@uk_sf_writer It was quite impoverished for many people. Inflation stripped the value of wages. Food was disproportionately expensive and became more so after cheap imports from outside Europe were cut off by the EEC

@WilliamClouston Will the whole cabinet move back and forth with him? Will they also have offices in Manchester staffed with advisors and civil servants? What will happen in an emergency? How will they answer emergency questions in Parliament when they are in Manchester? It's a gimmick.

@JACKIE1PLANET @DioceseWrexham There should be demonstrating outside the Chinese Embassy. China produces more CO2 than the rest of the world put together. The Church should not be a foil for these left wing activists. In the UK they should be more concerned about fuel poverty caused by net zero ideologues.

@Shaunmb1 @BBCBreakfast Angela herself benefitted by buying her council house. The problem was that not enough new houses were built and restrictive planning rules created a shortage. Labour hypocrisy as usual.

In Peru, a growing trend is transforming traditional funerals into festive celebrations through "dancing undertakers" (los portadores bailarini), offering a cheerful alternative to solemn mourning.

Since 1978, China has planted more than 66 billion trees in an effort to slow the expansion of two major deserts, making it the country with the largest tree-planting effort in history. China has carried out the world’s largest afforestation program, planting tens of billions of trees to combat desertification and restore damaged ecosystems. After decades of deforestation, overgrazing, and expanding deserts, China launched the Three North Shelterbelt Program in 1978 to slow the growth of the Gobi Desert and protect farmland and cities from dust storms. The effort later expanded to areas surrounding the Taklamakan Desert, where trees were planted along highways, rivers, and desert borders to stabilize shifting sands. These programs helped increase China’s forest coverage from around 12% in the early 1980s to more than 24% today, with NASA satellite data showing China contributed about 25% of the world’s increase in leaf area between 2000 and 2017.

@spectator And yet it is unlikely that she would be able to work as a teacher, nurse, doctor, police officer or social worker. For ordinary people, this would debarr them from most professional careers. Labour's intentions are pure, so that trumps all other considerations.

Now I earn my living writing and speaking about prisons, crime, migration, justice and corruption. Perhaps, I have become a gamekeeper. My sentence will become spent on 6 November, but even then I will still, as a matter of fact, be a 'convicted fraudster'. And that is okay. To pretend otherwise would be to return to the habit of dishonesty. ✍️ David Shipley Article | spectator.com/article/louise… | @ShipleyWrites

Delighted to see Kemi is taking a page out of the successful Thatcher playbook ( she dumped soaking wet Francis Pym as Foreign Sec in ‘83) by removing the whip from the treacherous Lord Barnwell - May’s ex chief of staff. Enough said. Every time she kicks out a lefty Tory ( that’s hopeless Ben Spencer round my way) her chances of winning a General Election increases.

In an unprecedented move, Labour have scrapped the Conservative vote to force Andy Burnham to come to Parliament to answer questions when he becomes PM on Monday. Labour are running scared because they know the honeymoon will be over the minute he has to tell us his plans.

The object I found most moving in today’s visit to the National Funeral Museum is this, made by an East London woman in 1904 for her neighbour who'd given birth to stillborn twins. In a world that didn't like to discuss such things openly, this was to memorialise the woman's loss
