Peering out a Dragon Endeavor window that frames red and green aurora streaming by Dragon Freedom docked to the front of the International Space Station. When Crew-9 arrived I moved out of my crew quarters on the ISS to make room for @AstroHague. I now sleep in Dragon Endeavor while we wait to undock. We take most of our images from the cupola, but sleeping here has been amazing. This is the view out the window this evening . . . I miss my family and friends but we would have missed today’s insane aurora if we had undocked today. I watched the aurora with @astro_Pettit today from the cupola and on a later pass I watched it from Endeavor with @AstroHague. 0.8s, 14mm, f1.4, ISO 3200

NASA is advancing nuclear power and propulsion in space to accomplish President Trump’s national space objectives. With SR-1 Freedom, launching in 2028, we will demonstrate nuclear electric propulsion and deliver SkyFall helicopters to Mars. In collaboration with @Energy, these capabilities are key to future missions to Mars and beyond. A new chapter of deep space exploration begins. 🚀

TIL not all astronauts lose bone mass in space. There is wide scatter. Some astronauts actually gained bone mass in space.

@josefprusa @Hilbe "Wizardry" seems appropriate for FDM in zero-g as supports are no longer needed for large bridges and overhangs!

Think about electromagnetic interference. Did you ever have a set of analog speakers and an amplifier on your desk. They made a weird but distinctive buzzing sound a second or two before your older cell phone rang or a text message arrived? The buzz does not kill you. But we want to make sure electronics do not mess with our spacecraft avionics unexpectedly.

I wonder why NASA chose to go with DSLR’s over Mirrorless for the Artemis 2 mission

@_Testflight_ @MaxQphotos Verifying a device will work is more than just certifying it for spaceflight in general. How the device interacts with each individual spacecraft matters. My guess is the DSLR went through certification on Orion before the mirrorless we currently use on ISS became available.

@JohnTTWN I'm sorting through video to see if it exists but you can do it from the aft end of Node 1 to the forward end of Node 2 repeatably after a month or so of practice.

This took a few takes to capture . . . Initially held onto the camera mounting bracket and pushed off (you can hear the bracket clinking). Then carefully let it go so the camera floats with you through space station. Flew from the aft end of the lab to the forward end of Node 2.

@Ascii211 Feels like a dumb question, but what's used to counter the reaction force in the central section? I am pretty sure I have read there are reaction wheels dotted about for station keeping - I guess that could be sufficient at whatever the real-time speed of this vid is?

I enjoy how the elevator doors close on this floor of a building at Johnson Space Center.

@ajtourville Sometimes when the lighting conditions were just right for a few orbits I missed a bit of sleep . . . :) I remember this particular timelapse rather well. Numerous attempts orbit after orbit trying to get it right late into my normal sleep hours.

I don't know how astronauts aboard the ISS manage to get anything done with views like these!

Don (@astro_Pettit) and I decided to demo how spaceships could transfer rocket fuel (AKA propellant) in space using water bottles, water, and Alka-Seltzer . . . what could go wrong?

Expedition 72 with Crew-8 in thermal infrared (all 11 of us minus me taking the photo). Just before Crew-8 boarded their Dragon spacecraft for return to Earth, I snapped an all-crew photo with our thermal infrared camera. Can you identify the crew? Hint, two are in their SpaceX spacesuits).

@theforester000 I dabbled in some long exposures showing the city lights streaking by. I plan to do some post processing now that I am on the ground. @astro_Pettit has done some great long exposure shots with streaking city lights and posted them online.

@dominickmatthew in the smarter every day interview, you talk about city lights streaking and such in photographs. And that got me wondering. Have you ever done photographs that emulate the look from the intro titles of The Expanse? Thatd be cool methinks youtube.com/watch?v=HUIsX1…

@dominickmatthew Whenever I see the interior of the ISS, it reminds me of a Rube Goldberg situation, with all those wires, cables, tubes and pipes on the walls of the laboratories. How do the astronauts know what is what? People in Houston help?

This. Joe is spot on. What a time to be alive . . . the freely available resources online to learn and explore in your free time are amazing. In some of my downtime every week on Earth I keep learning in areas like CAD, programming, imagery, and circuits.
Joe Barnard 🚀@joebarnard

If you're stoked about this, don't let that energy go to waste! Go build something! You can learn CAD, programming, circuit design, and lots more entirely for free online *right now*
