@jimoberman @McFaul Why do my tax dollars have to go to building another country
English

@McFaul Hope he follows through. There are no politically correct wars. Look what happened in Vietnam. Afghanistan.
Should put them in the dark. We can pay to help them rebuild after they surrender. Just like we rebuilt Europe after WWII.

@rmlunn @ImBreckWorsham Exactly. But it will have no effect if Iran refuses to sell it or only sells it in Yuan.

Check your news sources:
The United States did **not** just buy $14 billion worth of oil from Iran. The claim appears to stem from recent news about a temporary U.S. policy change amid the ongoing U.S.-Israel war with Iran (which began in late February 2026).
Here's what actually happened:
- On March 20, 2026, the U.S. Treasury Department issued a **narrow, temporary 30-day waiver** (a general license) allowing the **sale and delivery** of Iranian oil and petroleum products that were **already loaded onto tankers** (stranded at sea) as of that date.
- This applies to roughly **140 million barrels** of existing Iranian oil cargo.
- At current oil prices, this volume is estimated to be worth **more than $14 billion**—and that revenue would go to **Iran** (Tehran), not the U.S.
- The goal is to quickly increase global oil supply, ease surging energy prices (driven by the war's disruptions in the Middle East, including threats to the Strait of Hormuz), and prevent even higher costs for consumers worldwide.
- Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described it as a "narrowly tailored, short-term authorization" strictly limited to oil already in transit—no new Iranian oil production or purchases are allowed.
- Importantly, the U.S. has **not** directly purchased this oil. The waiver permits **global buyers** (likely mostly in Asia, like China, which has been buying discounted Iranian oil) to complete transactions without sanctions penalties. The U.S. might allow some Iranian-origin oil to be imported if needed to finalize sales, but there's no indication of large-scale direct U.S. purchases, and the U.S. hasn't meaningfully imported Iranian oil since the 1979 revolution due to longstanding sanctions.
This is a pragmatic (and ironic) move by the Trump administration to stabilize energy markets **during** the active military conflict with Iran—not a purchase by the U.S. government or a sign of normalized trade. It's the third such waiver during the war (following similar actions for Russian oil stuck due to sanctions).
The viral phrasing ("The United States just bought $14 billion in oil from Iran") misrepresents the story—it's about **unlocking existing Iranian oil for sale to the world** (benefiting Iran financially in the short term) to cool global prices, not the U.S. buying it directly.

@NeilShenvi It is certainly inconsistent with the character of Christ. And it is a sin that needs to be repented of and dealt with but l’ll leave the final judgement up to God.

@EWErickson You are talking about a history that was a very long time ago and the British culture is much different than the Japanese culture as far as sensitivities are concerned.

@realstewpeters Not to mention that Kim threatens us all the time. The truth is it’s about leverage. The super powers want to keep as many people under their thumb as they can to protect their intere$ts. When someone gets a nuke they get a seat at the table.

@Daytobehappy I’d see more movies if 1) it was cheaper to go to the theatre 2) drive ins made a comeback 3) if not for them coming out on streaming right away. I couldn’t tell you a single movie that was nominated not that I wouldn’t be interested but…

@arash_tehran Maybe it should be. It’s them that are the ones who get their people into wars. It’s the common people that are dying for the rich and powerful. If it goes the other way around maybe there’ll be no more wars.
