We would be inside the customs union so no tariffs and non barriers to trade for *our* exporters. It will result in far easier trade for especially *our* SMEs over tariffed and still lots of NTBs, FTAs with more distant markets. There are 16 customs unions around the world. People mock the EU as “bureaucracy”. But that bureaucracy turned a continent of borders, currencies and wars into a space where 450 million people can travel, pay, call, study and work almost as if it were domestic. That is not boring. That is civilization becoming usable.

My Dad saw Europe at its worst in Italy in WW2. He still fell in love with it. When I was old enough each summer he packed our Austin with my Mum, me, a tent, tins of baked beans, PG Tips and showed me all its countries and languages I've loved it ever since. Happy Europe Day !
