The message from the ground in Makerfield this morning is that many voters who wanted to back Restore Britain got cold feet over fears of ‘splitting the right-wing vote’, so they switched to Reform UK to try to keep Labour out. What the results reveal, however, is that it was a close race between Labour and the combined right-wing vote. This is a HUGE shift in an area that has traditionally been a safe Labour stronghold. Despite the final outcome, this still marks a major change in voter sentiment. It is clear: Britain is waking up. 🇬🇧

You’re assuming that because a statement was made in a Leave-voting constituency, it can be disregarded. But politicians are generally judged on what they say publicly, not on theories about what they “really mean”. If Burnham becomes PM and later advocates rejoining the EU, then judge him on that. Until then, the evidence is that he has publicly said he would not seek to return the UK to the EU. Everything else is inference.

Closer to Europe

If he becomes PM, he will have no choice but to think of the whole country, rather than a small majority of voters (in 2016) in one constituency. Or... he falls like Brexit has made every other...

It’s a bit more nuanced than that. The reports are mixed because Andy Burnham has made different comments at different times, and some headlines have emphasized different parts of his position. The clearest recent statement, made during the Makerfield by-election campaign in May 2026, was actually that he would not seek to take Britain back into the EU. According to reports of that speech, Burnham said Britain would be stuck in “a permanent rut if we’re just constantly arguing” about Brexit, and added: “Let’s fix our own country. Let’s get it working again.” However, other reports from the same period said Burnham acknowledged that there may be a long-term case for rejoining the EU, while stressing that it was not part of his current political programme and not what he was campaigning on in Makerfield. The confusion comes partly from comparisons with another Labour leadership contender, Wes Streeting. Streeting explicitly argued that Britain should rejoin the EU and called Brexit a “catastrophic mistake.” Burnham then found himself repeatedly being asked whether he agreed. In response, he largely tried to move the debate away from EU membership and toward domestic economic and regional policy. So, if you’re asking what Burnham himself most recently said, the closest thing to a direct answer is: Britain should not spend its time reopening the Brexit argument, and he would not campaign to return the UK to the EU now.
