@brandon_xyzw @ZFellows_ A lot of people are getting hung up on this. But really, it's simple. Yosanta had already worked on this, yes, but he was the kind of guy who had already worked on a thousand things, and Bezos and others had not. It was a further indication of what sort of person was needed.

@ZFellows_ Wait wait wait. I was on board with this until he said Yosanta basically already worked through a similar problem they were tackling for the first time.

@Oscar_CEDS I read Winograd's book on SHRDLU, that was brilliant and very interesting. I recall it was written in a nonstandard dialect of Lisp, and that later efforts to port it had problems, but I don't recall whether there was final success or not.

Drumming up support for the ITS recreation project! github.com/PDP-10/its I spent a lovely sleepless night delving in to Winograd's SHRDLU, the ~1969 AI that moved minds: tinyurl.com/shrdlu-ai One of 100s of PDP-10 programs found on MIT's 'ultimate hacker' ITS OS #PiDP10

@DynamicWebPaige I once had a similar problem; my formal job title on my business card was "architect" (doing CPU architecture), but of course all my relatives thought I designed houses (and had no idea what a CPU was, so explanations didn't help much).

on a more humorous note, TIL I learned that a non-zero number of my relatives think I work for a company called "AI"

it is only called reasoning if a meat brain does it, otherwise it’s just retrieval of approximate algorithms present in the pre-training data mixture

Some commentators (surprise!) didn’t get the key point: that climatologists distinguish between ‘thermodynamic’ and ‘dynamic’ effects of climate change. So far we’ve mostly seen thermodynamic effects on extremes, but we argue there’s more: we can now also see changes in dynamics.

@SonatUzun No no, there's really only 3000 - 5000 that are really worth playing, and picking a core of 1000 or so isn't too unreasonable.

@FUZxxl It was criticized for the same things 40 years ago, and people shrugged and said it was an idealized model to make it possibile to analyze things. Some bought into that, others remained dubious. At any rate I don't see that the adjective "modern" really even figures into this.

An entertaining rant^W essay on how the OSI model came to be, why it's unsuitable for describing modern computer networks, and why it shouldn't be taught as such.
Robert Graham@robertgraham

BTW, my OSI screed has expanded to a 200 page textbook that nobody can actually read. docs.google.com/document/d/1iL… The problem is OSI is full of misconceptions, and unwinding those misconceptions requires a LOT of information, often going all the way back to mainframes/X.25.

#Hurricane #OTIS. Stunning specimen. So much to say—where to begin? Literally came out of the blue—computer models didn't even hint at this. & now we're looking at direct, Cat-5 hit on #Acapulco, a city of 1 million people. Global models, in particular, failed spectacularly. 1/2

It's not just you, strawberries have less flavor and aroma than they used to. One surprising reason was published this year. No one wants anthracnose and botrytis eating their strawberries, so growers apply a fungicide like Pristine 38WG or Abound 2.08F or Quadris Top 1.67SC.

@rsnous The original Unix *did* support all of that (virtual memory was added as soon as the PDP 11 hardware supported it). As did other operating systems long before MSDOS such as Multics. Footnote: VM was invented by Burroughs in the 60s and popularized by IBM in the 60s on IBM S/360

but no one would dispute that those were 'operating systems' in their time, even though they only cover a small subset of what we would call the defining features of an OS

i keep thinking about taking the operating systems class in college where in a few weeks you implement way more functionality (virtual memory, hierarchical filesystem, preemptive multitasking) than existed in MS-DOS or the original Mac OS or the original Unix

@lorenschmidt The ordering of bytes within a word is CPU architecture dependent and therefore potentially surprising or nonportable or both. In C/C++ I sometimes union { uint8 bytes[4]; uint32 word }, there's also the highly controlled but messy #ifdef solution.

js tilemap rendering benchmarks will add to thread as i write tests the baseline is one single function call per tile. the function is a barebones function draw_sprite(index, x, y) { context.drawImage(sprite[index], x, y) }

After the news with Bandcamp and other platforms, I realized musicians could totally put their albums on @itchio. The only thing missing is a media player... So I built one! Scritch is a simple, fully customizable media player designed for music artists 🎵
