@LeftyWinter Yes, Marx and Engels name many forms of socialism that are opposed to communism in the Communist Manifesto: feudal socialism, reactionary socialism, clerical socialism, bourgeois socialism, petit-bourgeois socialism, utopian socialism, critical-utopian socialism....

Yes I'm a socialist who's anti-communist. We exist. I've read Engels writing and literature and some of the communist manifesto, I study the Chinese Government and how it works there. Meanwhile, there are aspects where I agree with communism. I still disagree with the authoritarian rule of communism. People will tell me that I can't be a socialist and anti-communist at the same time because communism is the final stage of socialism. That's why I think democratic socialism is different in this aspect. It's why we try so hard to tell folks that democratic socialism is not communism. To recruit normie folks who don't subscribe to that ideology.

I'm a AOC/Mamdani type of socialist to my core. It's who brought me wanting to join DSA. I won't apologize for not subscribing to a political ideology such as communism, however what I said was very inflammatory and for that I'm sorry. I need to attack ideas. Not people.

@OmarSHaqueMDPhD @DanielCDolmar Some of them probably think that people could have done otherwise. And according to Everett's "Many Worlds" interpretation of quantum physics, there are other universes in which they did do otherwise. You just don't get to decide which universe you're in.

Thank you; Yes, but these neuroscientists probably don’t realize that when they accept compatibilism, they give up the idea that the agent could do otherwise (van inwagen’s consequence argument) and they give up the idea that the person is ultimately responsible for acting as they do (Pereboom’s argument). Dennett didn’t think that these things were “worth wanting”, but probably most people do, and probably most legal systems that people would want to live in presuppose that these are things worth wanting.

Truck drivers are now taking down Flock cameras in an Ohio town by ramming directly into the poles, and more people are starting to do the same. The destruction has reportedly triggered a chain reaction, with other drivers following suit and leaving law enforcement scrambling. Even people without vehicles are joining in, using baseball bats to smash the cameras. "The vandalism is part of a trend across the country."

Meta used AI to target workers with medical conditions for layoffs, according to a new lawsuit. Twenty-six former Meta employees are suing, accusing the company of using AI that disproportionately targeted people with disabilities or workers who took medical leave in selecting people for mass layoffs. reuters.com/world/meta-use…

@CeeElexF @erikbryn Hilarious that you use the phrase that Jeremy Bentham used to describe "rights". Yes, I believe in rights, and I also believe in planning for dangers that might never happen.

This is nonsense on stilts. You want to legislate for something that might never happen at great cost to liberty and progress. You don't get to only argue one side of the equation. You have not risk weighted anything. The European disease eats every bit of progress before it the seed casing even breaks.

Here's our statement on AI and the economy. We Must Act Now A Statement on AI’s Transformation of the Economy 1. AI may become radically more powerful over the next 10 years. 2. This could drive an unprecedented transformation of our economy, larger than the Industrial Revolution, but unfolding over a vastly shorter time frame. It could bring risks, including large-scale job displacement, as well as opportunities such as major gains in living standards. 3. Economists, policymakers and technology leaders must act now to understand the economics of transformative AI and to build the incentives, guardrails, and institutions needed to steer AI in a direction that complements humans and benefits society.

in Aurora Chicago , ICE agents surrounded the car of a U.S. citizen in a parking lot… fire into a vehicle's windshield with children in it, as she screamed that her children were inside. Agents then dragged her from the car without presenting a warrant or probable cause.

I reject the whole “something big is happening in the world therefore we need to make a new regulatory regime for it”. Consider regulation only when concrete things start to go wrong, and then ask if harms averted are worth the costs of regulation.

Overall, it's far easier to see Greek influence on modern western ethics than Judeo-Christian. But also, there's Persian, Egyptian, Roman, many kinds of influences. 9/9

Philo of Alexandria was Jewish but also a Platonist and reinterpret Judaism by way of Platonism. Many of the early "Church Fathers" of Christianity (Jerome, Clement, Justin Martyr) were deeply Platonist - indeed, I see more Greek influence than Jewish. 8/?

How to test if western (including western atheist) morality is derived from Christianity: ignore all the aspects of morality that all known moral systems share, like the prohibition on murder. Focus on the differentia. 1/?
