PSA: If I can easily get two fingers underneath a tourniquet, and even lift it up off the arm, it’s not a tourniquet, it is a pseudo-tourniquet. It will not #stopthebleed 🩸🚑

@rbarbosa91 Leads to the question, what should all 10 surgeons be experts in?

A trauma/acute care surgery group with, say, 10 surgeons, is not comprised of 10 individuals that are equally good at all of the things. For example, all 10 surgeons cannot be rib platers or abdominal wall people. You have to find and carve out your niche(s) within the group. 🧐

Saw a person walk through @TSA checkpoint with a full bottle of water today because it was deemed medically necessary. For a guy that loves loopholes, that was genius!

Surgeons have “preference cards,” for each type of surgery we do. It tells the OR staff how we want our room set up, which types of instruments, what kind of sutures, etc. But hospital systems will make surgeons re-enter much of that information when we book a case in the computer. Then they’ll request an email the week before to ensure they have all the right stuff. Then they’ll text the surgeon the day before the case to ensure they have all the right stuff. Then they’ll still get it wrong. That doesn’t happen at a surgeon owned hospital or ASC. They realize all that redundancy costs money and is worthless if they’re still getting it wrong. This is why physician led care is essential to fixing healthcare costs. Just another small example.

If you reach your goals by compromising your values, you haven’t succeeded. If you fall short of your goals by upholding your values, you haven’t failed. The true measure of accomplishment is standing by your principles when they’re tested.

I had the pleasure last night of watching a chief resident make a life threatening diagnosis, order the right test, and do a life saving operation. Proud of these residents @BSWHTemple_SURG

Today is Tom Osborne's 88th birthday. Years ago I compiled a list of facts illustrating TO's greatness. My favorites: 1) Osborne is the only coach since 1960 with 3 perfect national championship seasons. (The GOAT, Nick Saban, has 2). Osborne produced all 3 in a span of 5 yrs.

@WCInvestor Length of residency, cost of living, and members of your household (spouse, kids, etc.) are key factors. I owned my residency home for 9 years, which turned into a great financial investment.

Renting a home during residency should be the default choice. There are situations when buying your house as a resident can make sense, but don't assume that yours is the exception without careful consideration. What choice did you make during residency?

I attended an amazing grand rounds today at @bswhealth_Templ given by guest speaker @JJcolemanMD on surgeon wellness. She opened the talk by saying that @MLB players take 2-3 days to recover after away games due to sleep disruption 🧵
