In every scenario, a volume knob that you turn is superior to volume buttons that you press. Especially in a car. Far quicker and more accurate. Why do buttons even exist?

Always a pleasure to see our brilliant and smiling doctoral researchers getting together and presenting their work to the @lborogeog community. Here a few photos also of the posters of our GYE Master students, who joined in for the DR Day.

Day 3 of @lborogeog in the Peak District and we welcome our next group of students to @YHAIlamHall. Here are the physical geography students ready to tackle Thorpe Cloud which you can just about see through the mist in the background! #lboroontour

Encounters with AI - example no 492 Filling in a form to become a member of a university library. Once it had confirmed that I was staff and not a student, it asked which year of being a student I am: first, second, third, fourth or fifth? I said I am a fifth year student.

Hi Andrew, folks like me? I don't say we need to set an example to China, I do say we have to take responsibility for our own emissions regardless of what other countries are doing (in answer to the what about China? question) - and that it’s the only way to have any credibility when calling on other countries to also act (as we have frequently done). Also, here's some more up to date info from China (first half 2024) - an 80% year on year reduction in the rate of coal power station consenting. It’s important to keep up to date and not just repeat relatively old positions..:) greenpeace.org/eastasia/press…
Andrew Neil@afneil

If China is doing better than us on hitting green energy targets then why do folks like you argue we have to plough on fast to net zero to set China and others an example? Looks like you now say they’re setting an example for us (of course they’re not). Also, creating renewable capacity and generating electricity from that capacity are two very different matters. The latter is a fraction of the former and would be nothing like enough to power Britain. But I’m sure you know that. Best we leave matters with this graph and update it as the decade progresses. Let’s see where China is by 2030. At the moment it’s hardly in a good place when it comes to coal-fired generation.

@FranticFern74 @DaleVince That's not the evidence. That's the headline. Read the rest of the report. If you don't understand that climate changes over a variety of timescales (mostly very long), and for a variety of reasons, you should not have been teaching climate science.

@DrDaveGraham @DaleVince "It is unequivocal that human influence has warmed the atmosphere, ocean and land." That's about the sum of the evidence. There is no proof that human activity is the cause. The earth has always warmed and cooled. In 1976 I was forced to teach that there would soon be an ice age.

@FranticFern74 @DaleVince Physics. The evidence has been nicely summarised in the IPCC reports. They are about the most careful reviews of scientific evidence and consensus that you will ever find in any subject. If that's not good enough for you, then you're not interested in evidence.

@DaleVince What for? There is no proof that emissions cause warming. The link between CO2 and temperature is a correlation. You cannot prove that CO2 causes temperature increase. It is probably the other way round and it’s the sun’s activities that cause warming.

@Scottmp123 A bit of a process of elimination from some of the other replies, rather than any great insight 🤔

Can you spot the micrometeorite? Believe it or not there is only one. Don’t feel bad if you can’t… this one might be a little tricky. :)

I’m thinking of trying something completely different … a complete change of course … is it too late at 49 to make your life what you have always wanted it to be?

1/ Today’s announcement from Ofgem will be worrying news for families across the country. The expected rise in the price cap is yet another consequence of the toxic legacy left by the previous government.
