As 2022 draws to a close, I will retweet over the next 5 days the 5 tweets I posted in 2022 that got the most positive engagements. Number 5 is this tweet about the power of wrapping data in a compelling story that links to people's values & sense of shared purpose. #2022retro

Data is critical to improvement but without a meaningful context that people can connect with, it's hard to use data to motivate change. When we explain data with a compelling story that links to people's values & sense of shared purpose, magic happens #QITwitter Art: @gapingvoid

If we want to transform systems, we must become pattern learners. Changing processes & structures is insufficient. We should pay attention to the everyday patterns, behaviours, relationships & interactions underlying all parts of systems: griffith.edu.au/__data/assets/… By @YunusGriffith

Bad leaders see power as an opportunity. Good leaders see it as a responsibility. Framing power as a responsibility can discourage leaders from being selfish, making risky decisions, and ignoring advice. It's time to teach people that power is for service, not self-interest.

Teams & organisations need a "North Star" - a massive direction & purpose. If people are clear on a North Star, they're clear on (almost) everything else. It aligns their efforts & guides them on their work – without needing micro-managing: gapingvoid.com/blog/2022/09/1… By @gapingvoid

Right now most orgs' KPIs are based on the org's goals, not the goals of the person who is trying to get something done. It's high time that we shift our KPIs to make the goals of the person a higher priority than org goals like "engagement."

In the tech world, orgs as entities worship speed and simplicity, but simplification of humanity down to surface-level archetypes leads directly to assumptions, bias, and harm. We have to start taking the time to understand people and let that inform our strategy.
