Epidemiologist Dr. Repp found that multiple victims of suicide had recently surrendered their pets to a shelter. As a result, shelter staff was trained to ask the right questions & provide resources & 7 suicides have been prevented so far #NAME2018 #forensics #notjustaboutthedead

@pbatesmurphy @jbcarmody Yes, this! I’m a Canadian MD and did my fellowship in the US. I’m board certified by the American Board of Pathology, I had a California practice licence, but I can’t work in the US on an H1B visa because I didn’t sit the USMLEs (ie med school exams). How does that make sense?!?

Last week, Tennessee passed legislation to allow international medical graduates to obtain licensure and practice independently *without* completing a U.S. residency program. This is BIG news. So you know what that means. Time to break it down, Winners & Losers™️ style. (🧵)

I love this! And it applies both to pathology in the clinical setting and to autopsies in death investigation. Our job is more important and nuanced than most people appreciate. #forensics #PathTwitter

This case is a great example of why it’s so important to have properly qualified forensic pathologists doing medicolegal autopsies, especially complex cases. Autopsies are not as simple as they may seem and the implications of an improperly performed exam can be huge!

The father of Lachie Jones is calling for police to reopen the investigation into his 3-year-old's death. Watch Newsroom's investigation, which revealed that the initial post mortem carried out on the toddler should not have concluded that he drowned newsroom.co.nz/investigations…

@FutureBringer I’m okay, thanks. We’re lucky here in Christchurch - just a bit of rain, nothing of the craziness they’re experiencing on the North Island! Thanks for checking in 😊

What can we learn from the death of the #Queen? The world has watched her live through the process of #OrdinaryDying, and yet dying went unspoken, un-named. Let's notice what nobody mentioned: we all saw the Queen going through the stages of ordinary dying. A 🧵... 1/

@expensivecare Great thread! I’m a forensic pathologist and if ambulance records are available, I always read them. Even when the patient was dead at the scene or dies en route, those records often have clues to what happened and can be very valuable.

14/14 And all ambulance services probably need to work harder (and work with other health services) on ensuring that the the PCR is written in a readable format and is available to other clinicians quickly and reliably. End of thread. Thanks for reading.

1/n I've heard a few times over the years that many paramedics think that their patient care records (PCRs) are primarily for internal audit purposes and aren't read by other clinicians. So - A thread on EMS PCRs...

Kids and young people represent a critical 20% of the team of 5 million yet we don’t typically include them in policy briefings or media pieces. In consultation with kids, @JulieSeraSpray and I wrote this piece about the pandemic especially for kiwi kids thespinoff.co.nz/science/19-11-…

I love that more than half our mortuary team (including all 5 pathologists) commute to work by means other than car (walking, bike, e-scooter, bus). I bike, and few things are as satisfying as breezing by bumper-to-bumper rush hour traffic!
