VIDEO | On HPV vaccine programme, Dr Garima Shukla, senior resident (Obstetrics and Gynecologist), Safdarjung Hospital, says, “In India, approximately 150,000 new cases of cervical cancer are reported each year, and nearly 75,000 women die from the disease. About one-fourth of the total global deaths from cervical cancer occur in India. The primary cause of this cancer is Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection, particularly types 16 and 18, which are responsible for nearly 70 per cent of cases. Scientific research shows that if the HPV vaccine is administered before infection, its effectiveness is more than 90 per cent. In this direction, on 28 February 2026, the Government of India launched a national HPV vaccination campaign, under which free vaccination is being provided to girls aged 9 to 14 years. If high vaccination coverage is ensured, a reduction of more than 50 per cent in cervical cancer cases in the coming decades is possible. As a doctor, I would like to say that now is the time to focus more on prevention than treatment. #WATCH | Delhi | President of the Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association (FORDA), Dr Devaunshi Kaul says, "The intent was to fill up the vacant seats, the 18,000 seats that are left vacant inside the healthcare infrastructure, but we have to draw a line somewhere, putting the cutoffs down to zero percentile is not justified at all. This is not a entry level exam. We are talking about specialists, postgraduate doctors, so a basic level of cutoff should be established; otherwise, even if we keep diluting these cutoffs to a bare minimum, we are diluting the kind of doctors we are producing for the health care of the future... Yes, we have written to the ministry, but we have not received a reply. Also, the third round of counselling has already started. We are planning to escalate it further in any way possible with other doctor communities as well... Yes, we are up to discussion for this (protests), that we might have to escalate this because nobody in the ministry is willing to listen" (16.01)
