@cath_cov It’s inspired a summer of re-reading for me - Dante, Homer, Milton, Camoẽs, Beowulf, Gawain poet. The Lusiads so far my favourite. Spenser next.

I reached my mid-50s without reading The Odyssey. Then I decided to read it before seeing the film. Yes, a middle-aged dad thing. My 18 year old son, however, did the same - a student of Business Studies who has never encountered the classics throughout his education.

From a classicist's viewpoint, the most wonderful thing about the Nolan extravaganza is that millions of people who only knew of Homer as a Simpson are now interested in Homer, and might even think of reading the Odyssey and learning something about Greek antiquity.

More and more British commentators are questioning the validity and wisdom of the US’s break from Britain. From the outset historical and political bonds were arbitrarily denied and a discourse of Republican casting of outsiders as enemies was adopted. newstatesman.com/culture/books/…

@DrRobinWard @tc1415 @davidtorrance What does "professing" mean in the act? Because he definitely doesn't profess the Roman Catholic Religion from the perspective of the church. He openly rejects catholic bioethics.

Also, who is going to advise the King on ecclesiastical appointments, because Burnham surely is precluded by the Roman Catholic Relief Act 1828.......

I'd go and see the Odyssey, but I'm worried about getting home afterwards.

@gnocchiwizard I agree. I think the Fagles has really dated and the control of the diction was never very good.

wilson's odyssey translation is great. i find the fagles translation is actually more full of clunky anachronisms, while lattimore is dry like cardboard. wilson's decision to use iambic pentameter is clever and highly effective.

Nolan's Odyssey is a real triumph. Is it entirely faithful to the text? No. Is it a piece of cinematic excellence that can both provoke and startle at times? Yes. Well worth a watch.

@MinooFramroze Must include an Alfred Duggan style scene attending a Latin rite High Mass in the Parthenon, while enraged prozymites grind their teeth outside.

The Odyssey set 1204-16. The Breton petty seigneur and occasional routier Eudes d’Ythaque masterminds the sack of Constantinople, develops a complex relationship with the Theotokos and is cursed by St Demetrius. After losing a couple of Aegean fiefdoms he is granted an Irish fief

Maybe the real treasure was the friends Odysseus made along the way.

Interesting to read in Pastor's life of Urban VIII that John Milton accepted an invitation to dine at the English College when visiting Rome in 1638. I imagine it as a somewhat awkward experience, on both sides.

I heard a new hymn yesterday (well, new to me; some of you will have been singing it for 3yrs), and I'm increasingly left wondering where the accusation that there's no theology in contemporary music comes from.
