Thanks to the first volume of Michael Palin's diaries, I recently discovered the glory of one of the greatest travel pieces in British publishing history. In early April 1977, The Guardian published a 7-page travel supplement on this "little-known" island nation. 1/

🚨BREAKING: People are digging up a 2010 CNN clip showing Obama’s $376M White House makeover — all paid for by taxpayers. Meanwhile President Trump’s $250M ballroom is coming out of his own pocket.

@DavidGHFrost And if you re-base this to January 2020, when the UK formally left the EU, you get a different picture: Based on this, food prices in the UK are 3% higher than they would have been, had they followed the Eurozone trend.

@instrumenthull @captgouda24 Not knowing the climate of the US well, is there not some correlation between the likelihood of rain, and political preferences in a local area? (Given that political views are very geographically centred?)

Protests are both a cause of changes in political attitudes, and a sign of changes. How do we disentangle the two? We can use rainfall as an instrumental variable — if rainfall on a day, conditional on likelihood of rain, is random and affects attendance, we can get the effect.

I’m forming an “economics education writing group” for this spring. Such groups work as a commitment device to help academics write more (there is extensive literature on this point). We’ll meet on Fridays on Zoom from 9am to 1pm (eastern time). We’ll start on January 17 and end on May 2. I hope that participants will attend for at least two hours; the time should enable West Coast economists to participate for this long. We’ll also have weekly readings and brief discussions on scholarly writing. For more information, please e-mail me at bill.goffe@psu.edu . #teachecon

@Samfr I read this as "Fifth-former", and thought you were having a joke about how William Hague was always the "Young Tory"... Then I re-read it...

William Hague is the fifth former Tory party leader to be Oxford Chancellor. The other four were all PMs as well (Wellington, Derby, Salisbury, Macmillan).

@beckymontacute For me, this is the policy that has the prospect of having positive impacts on student participation. The means testing, and absolute level, of loans often means that the loan doesn't even cover the cost of accommodation, leaving students needing to find other sources of income.

Really, really hoping we don't see a rise in tuition fees without something on maintenance - the levels have barely increased in years despite high levels of inflation, no movement in parental income bands + over a quarter of undergraduates skipping meals to save on food costs.

BREAKING: An increase in tuition fees, the first for eight years, is expected to be announced this afternoon. Sky's @tamcohen has the latest trib.al/PSy05JO 📺 Sky 501, Virgin 602, Freeview 233 and YouTube

However, this led to significant student complaints, with the NUS organising a boycott of the NSS. Ultimately, the plan to link fees to the TEF was removed, and fees have now sat at £9,250 for almost a decade.

The original idea was to use the Teaching Excellence Framework as a proxy for teaching quality, using measures of student satisfaction, and measures of students' progress and outcomes as measures of quality.

The @BBCNews is reporting that an increase in Tuition fees is set to be announced by @bphillipsonMP today. When fees were lifted to £9,000, the intention had always been to link them to inflation, with plans to link fee uplifts to "Teaching quality" bbc.co.uk/news/live/c0qd…
